WILDCATS READY FOR TEST AGAINST IDALOU THIS WEEK

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team stayed unbeaten last week, with a miraculous fourth quarter comeback to down Post, 21-20, at Wildcat Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-0 overall on the season.

Head Coach Jimmy Thomas talked about the team’s performance against Post, saying, “Obviously, we want to play better than what we did, especially offensively. I told the kids on Saturday, ‘Sometimes when you’re trying to learn how to become a good football team, you have to win the close ones and we did that the last two weeks.’ There are a lot of positives in what we’ve got going, but we know we’ve got to get better, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But, we are definitely proud of our kids and the way they kept playing.”

He talked about the adjustments they made at halftime, saying, “There was a lot of frustration in the air at halftime, because we probably should have had a lot of points on the board and didn’t. We overthrew receivers, didn’t catch some, didn’t protect a couple of times, but we went in at halftime looked at our game plan and challenged the kids to make plays. There wasn’t a bunch of panic, there wasn’t a bunch of yelling and screaming at halftime, we just said we have to make plays if we want to win this game and eventually we did and that is a credit to our kids.”

Coach Thomas talked about the defensive stand in the fourth quarter, saying, “You could see the energy level increase on that last defensive stand. We dominated the fourth quarter, they only had one first down in the quarter. We had to make a decision after our second score to kick it deep or go onside; we had one timeout left. The way we had played defensively, you could feel the difference in the energy. So, we kicked it deep and they got a run outside for a first down and were doing everything they could to drain the clock. But from there they went backwards and our defense re sponded.”

This week, the Wildcats enter into a battle of unbeatens, as they travel to Idalou to take on the Wildcats for their Homecoming game.

“It’s going to be fun. We want to play good people, that is how you get your program where you want it to be,” Coach Thomas said. “They are solid and are really physical. We are playing pretty good defense; we’re going to give up a big play from time-to-time, that is what this defense does. But, we’re going to have to prevent the big play, they have a really good running back. Idalou is throwing it a lot more then they have in the past. They have two tight ends and a wideout, who are pretty good weapons that we’ll have to manage a little bit.”

He added, “Offensively, for us, we’re going to have to get Ty’Jae Chambers going in the running game to help take the pressure off of our passing game. We’re just going to have to be solid and be a lot better than we were last week and we’re looking to take a step forward this week.”

Kick-off for this contest is slated for 7:30 p.m.
