Lady Cats fall to Presidio on Saturday, 0-2

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team fell to the Presidio Lady Devils on Saturday, 0-2, ending their day at the Littlefield Tournament.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 3-5 overall on the season.

Presidio was called for an illegal hit to open set one and Emily Champion followed it up with an ace to put the Lady Cats in front, 2-0, but Alexa Baeza delivered a kill off of Madison McNeese to get the Lady Devils on the board as they gained the serve.

Presidio rallied for three more points, before Head Coach Claire Head called a time out for Littlefield to talk things over. Out of the break, Ashtyn Parker delivered a kill through the block attempt of Valerie Armendariz and Baeza to make the score, 3-5. Baeza followed it up with a tip for a kill to push their lead out to, 3-6, but they couldn’t get a rally going, as Alondra Proano’s serve fell short of the net, making the score, 4-6.

Baeza sent a return hit out of bounds off of the serve from Danielle Zapata, but Judith Bustamante lifted a tip over Julie Bownds and McNeese’s block attempt for a kill to stretch the lead to, 5-7. McNeese responded with a kill past Jasmin Sotelo, but Bownds’ serve on the next play sailed over the back boundary line, making the score, 6-8.

The teams went back-and forth until Baeza sent a kill off of Bownds to make the score, 10-13. A break on the next play from Champion was killed at the net by Baeza, as Coach Head called a time out to talk things over with her girls. Out of the break, McNeese couldn’t get under the ball for a dig, as the score was extended to, 10-15.

Littlefield was able to stop the rally, when Parker sent a kill off of the block attempt by Baeza and Bownds followed it up with a kill of her own to cut the lead to, 12-15. Ayana Anaya sent a kill out of bounds to make it a twopoint game, Presidio answered with back-to-back kills to make the score, 13-17.

McNeese delivered a kill in front of Sotelo and Dafny Moreno sent a kill sailing out of bounds on the next play, as Presidio took a time out to talk things over with the score, 15-17.

Out of the break, a tip by Baeza landed out of bounds, but she bounced back on the next play, as she dropped in a tip over McNeese for a kill to make the score, 16-18. Baeza served up an ace off of Tricia Torres, but on the next play, McNeese was blocked by Moreno, but she tipped the net for a kill on the second chance opportunity to cut the lead to, 17-19.

Bownd’s serve was short of the net and Moreno blocked McNeese for a kill on the next play, making the score, 17-21. Kaeleigh Logan sent a kill through the block attempt of Baeza and Ysel Castro, but Presidio answered, as a hit by Castro was tipped at the net by McNeese, but nobody covered as it fell in for a kill, making the score, 18-22.

Presidio would close out the set a few plays later, as Parker hit the ball into the net, giving the Lady Devils set one, 22-25.

In set two, Presidio jumped out to an, 0-2, advantage, but the rally was cut short when Armendariz touched the net on a play, making the score, 1-2. Presidio regained the serve on the next play, but was unable to do anything with it, as Baeza’s hit on the following play sailed out of bounds, making the score, 2-3.

The teams went back-and-forth until Bustamante delivered a kill off Julie Rodriguez to make the score, 6-8. The Lady Devils would rally for four points before Parker sent a kill between Proano and Morales to trim the lead to, 7-12. The Lady Cats were unable to start a rally, as Zapata was called for touching the net on a block, giving the serve right back to Presidio.

Bustamante served up an ace off of McNeese, sparking a fourpoint rally that ended when Logan dropped in a tip for a kill, making the score, 8-17. Armendariz sent a kill out of bounds and Parker followed it up with a kill off of Morales to cut the lead to, 10-17, but Champion’s next serve sailed out of bounds, making the score, 10-18.

Bownds sent a hit into the net, but Castro’s serve on the following play was short of the net, making the score, 11-19. Presidio would go on to close out set two on a, 4-6 scoring run to take the set, 15-25, and the match, 0-2. The Lady Cats were at Estacado

The Lady Cats were at Estacado on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will be at the Denver City Tournament starting Aug. 26 th through the 28 th . They will return home on Tuesday when they host Tulia.

That match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
