Cotton planting mostly on schedule

Cotton here on the west portion of the Southern High Plains of Texas is mostly planted. There are dryland acres which still need to be planted as soon as it dries enough to get back in the field and before the planting deadline. We have been blessed with some significant rainfall the past few days, making prospects for a crop more realistic. This weather has thrown us a curve ball in the completion of planting and may cause some to divert acres to alternative crops such as grain sorghum or corn.

COTTON: The U.S. cotton projections for 2021/22 show a 100,000-bale increase in exports from last month, to 14.8 million bales, as stronger than expected late-season 2020/21 shipments extend past July 31. U.S. 2021/ 22 production and consumption are unchanged from last month, and with lower beginning stocks and higher exports, ending stocks are now 200,000 bales lower, at 2.9 million. The upland cotton farm price for 2021/22 is unchanged, at 75 cents per pound, while the 2020/21 price is reduced 1 cent to 67 cents per pound.

Littlefield is spraying to control mosquitoes

The City of Littlefield is monitoring for mosquitoes, and has scheduled spraying dates. Spraying of the entire city will begin three nights a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, to try to control mosquitoes.

Shelby’s Bridge hosts entertainment for area

Shelby’s Bridge of Sudan, hosted food and entertainment at the city park in Sudan, Saturday, June 12th. Donna Smith of Shelby’s Bridge explained that they wanted to create something different for area residents to enjoy on the weekend.

Area students graduate from ENMU May 15

Littlefield’s Early Risers Lions Club will be hosting its fourth annual Car Show and Cruise this Saturday, June 19, 2021 in the parking lot of the Littlefield Plaza Shopping Center (on the Northwest corner of Phelps and US 84).
