Shelby’s Bridge of Sudan, hosted food and entertainment at the city park in Sudan, Saturday, June 12th. Donna Smith of Shelby’s Bridge explained that they wanted to create something different for area residents to enjoy on the weekend.

Mike Corbin and Mike Hill, Sudan Fire Chief, presented musical selections in the pavillion at the Sudan City Park through the morning.

Several antique cars and motorcycles were on display in front of Shelby’s Bridge for visitors to discuss and enjoy. They also had a food truck selling roasted corn, and inside the store, the Sunshine Cafe was open for business.

Shelby’s Bridge is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, passionate about providing meaningful life experiences for people with disabilities. Their mission is to provide training in life skills that will enable persons with disabilities to function in life and job skills.

The business has grown rapidly from 17 to 40 friends working in the program, since its beginning in 2017. All are people with special needs.

Shelby’s Bridge encompasses social, and job skills set in a safe, no-fail, learning program. The mission is to prepare them for employment opportunities. One of their friends is currently employed at a T-shirt warehouse in Muleshoe. The non-profit is adding students, ranging in age from 15 to 27 years of age, from Muleshoe, Shallowater, Lamb County, and Sudan.

Shelby’s Bridge includes a Gift and Thrift Shop, the Sunshine Cafe and Wifi hub, and a full service floral shop. It has also enlarged its retail and training floor space, and completed a 2,400 sq ft. warehouse.

The goal is to start with students at Middle School and High School and take them to the point where they can function after school. They learn basic skills, such as counting their money, making purchases, filling out forms, social interactions, etc.
