The Sudan Hornets suffered a tough loss to Sundown last week. They look to try and get on track this week, as they go on the road for the first time this season to take on Farwell.
With the loss, the Hornets are 0-2 overall on the season.
“I thought that the effort and intensity was good all night,” Head Coach John Cornelius said. “We only gave up 200 yards of total offense to Sundown, but the seven turnovers is what really did us in. We have to do a better job of holding on to the football and taking care of the ball on offense.”
The Hornets totaled 53 yards of total offense, including 13 yards passing and 40 yards rushing.
Josh Cervera led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 22 yards, while Joel Williams added five carries for 13 yards.
Sal Juarez had one catch for 13 yards.
“It’s the turnovers for us. First week we gave up two pick-sixes, last week we had seven turnovers last week, that’s been the story for us, just not holding on to the football,” Coach Cornelius said. “Not only that, but it’s been setting the other team up inside the 10-yard line for a very short field for them to score on. We’ve been putting our defense in a bad spot. We just need to take care of the ball and execute; we’re either getting penalties or turning it over, we have to eliminate those two things.”
Defensively, Jaden Conley had 18 total tackles, including one for loss, while Drew Carr finished with 17 total tackles and Cervera and Gabriel Cisneros each finished with 12 total tackles.
Juarez also recorded an interception and a fumble recovery.
“Farwell is a good balanced football team; it starts with their running back Stansel, he is a dangerous weapon back there,” he stated. “Then they also have Henderson on the outside, who is a big receiver for them and if you don’t take care of business, he’ll hurt you out there as well. I just think we need to be disciplined on defense, right now we’ve been playing good defense.”
Coach Cornelius talked about some key match-ups on Friday, saying, “We talked about Stansel and Henderson. I think we have to do a good job of limiting those guys and then for us offensively, our offensive line versus their defensive front. We’re going to have to try and create some gaps and lanes for our running backs to get the ground game going.”
The Hornets are set to kick-off at Farwell at 7 p.m. on Friday.
