The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team stayed unbeaten last Friday, as they went on the road and knocked off the Abernathy Antelopes, 24-18.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 3-0 overall on the year.
In the opening frame, Gabe Mata caught a 5 3-yard touchdown pass from Sammy Saenz to put the Wildcats up, 7-0, after the PAT from Jay den Barrio. Abernathy, would answer in the second frame, as Kolt Micheletti scored on a 20yard run, but the two-point conversion was no good, leaving the score, 7-6.
Littlefield would extend their lead before halftime, as Barrio drilled a 32-yard field goal, making the score, 106, going into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, Saenz connected with AJ Cantu for a six-yard score and the PAT from Barrio was good, stretching their lead to, 176, going into the final quarter of play.
In the final frame, Micheletti would score on a three-yard run, but the Antelopes would again miss on the two-point conversion try, leaving the Wildcats in front, 17-12. Later in the quarter, Saenz would score on a six-yard touchdown run followed by the PAT from Barrio, pushing their lead to, 24-12.
Micheletti would find the endzone one more time for Abernathy, on a one-yard run, but they missed the two-point conversion, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 24-18.
The Wildcats totaled 451 yards of offense, including 266 rushing yards and 185 passing yards.
Offensively, Saenz was 16-22 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 21 carries for 128 yards and one score on the ground.
Jonas Camacho tallied 16 carries for 103 yards, and Daniel Rojas chipped in 13 carries for 35 yards on the ground.
In the receiving game, Barrio led the way with nine catches for 88 yards, while Mata tallied two catches for 59 yards and one touchdown, and Jacob Fuentes contributed two catches for 18 yards. Rojas had one catch for 10 yards and Cantu finished with two catches for 10 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, James Lockridge led the way with nine tackles, including two for loss and a sack, while Cantu added nine tackles, including two for loss, and Jonah Ramirez chipped in eight tackles. Saenz and Barrio each tallied eight tackles, while Rojas finished with seven tackles, including one for loss. Diego Lepez finished with three tackles and two sacks in the contest.
