The Littlefield Wildcats’ used a second half surge to rally past the Denver City Mustangs last Friday, 39-21.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-0 on the year.
In the first quarter, Sammy Saenz opened the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run. The twopoint conversion was no good, leaving the score, 6-0. The Mustangs would answer later in the quarter, as Andres Ornelas scored on a six-yard run. The PAT was good, putting Denver City in front, 76, heading into the second frame.
Denver City would build on their lead in the second quarter, as Luis Ornelas caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from David Franco. The PAT was good, extending their lead to, 14-6. Saenz would answer for the Wildcats, as he got loose on a 24yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was no good, as Littlefield cut the lead to, 14-12.
Franco would hit Gauge Galvan for a 12-yard touchdown pass that was followed by the PAT, as Denver City took a, 21-12, lead into the locker room at halftime.
It was a tale of two halves for the Wildcats, as they came out strong to begin the third quarter. Jonas Camacho would open the second half with a four-yard touchdown run. The PAT from Jay den Barrio was good, cutting the lead to, 21-19. Daniel Rojas would add a 15-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter, but the two-point conversion was no good, as Littlefield took a, 25-21, lead into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, Saenz would score on a three-yard touchdown run and Rojas followed it up with a two-yard run to slam the door on the Mustangs. Both PAT’s from Barrio were good, as the Wildcats took the contest, 39-21.
Littlefield totaled 503 yards of offense, including 300 rushing yards and 203 passing yards.
Saenz finished the game 13-15 passing for 180 yards, while adding 21 carries for 120 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Camacho finished with 18 carries for 115 yards and one touchdown, while Rojas talshort, lied 10 carries for 33 yards and two scores.
Jacob Fuentes led the receiving game with three catches for 111 yards, while Barrio added four catches for 28 yards and Nehemiah Beanes chipped in four catches for 27 yards. Gabe Mata added three catches for 19 yards and AJ Cantu finnext ished with two catches for 12 yards.
Defensively, Rojas tallied 11 tackles, eight solo, while Cantu chipped in 11 tackles, three solo and one sack. Brandon Espinoza finished with seven tackles, six solo, while Barrio contributed six tackles, four solo, and two interceptions.
