The Olton Fillies came up short last Tuesday in their home match with Talkington, dropping a five-set thriller, 23.
The Fillies dropped set one, 16-25, to the Lady Warriors, and they fell into an, 0-1, hole in set two, after the serve from Kaleigh Geldenhuys sailed out of bounds. Mabel Roller sent a kill out of bounds on the sideline for Talkington and Zyreil Hawkins sent a hit under the net for the Lady Warriors, making the score, 2-1. Roller and Hawkins sent back-to-back hits out of bounds on the sideline for Talkington and Zayda Gonzalez delivered a kill that was tipped out of bounds by Alyson Sifuentes to push the Olton lead to, 5-1.
The rally ended when Gonzalez hit a ball out of bounds on the sideline, but Olton would regain control, after Ann-Mitchell Owuor sent a kill sailing out of bounds to make the score, 6-2. Talkington would rally back and make it a one-point game, 6-5, after Owuor served up an ace, but her next serve fell short of the net, making the score, 7-5.
Taryn Smith served up three consecutive aces for Olton and Emilee Synatschk won a tip battle at the net with GiGi Cortez, pushing their lead to, 11 -5.Geldenhys sent a kill just out of bounds, but she would respond on the next play with a kill inside the back boundary line to extend their lead to, 12-6.
Cortez answered with a kill for Talkington, but it was short-lived, as the next serve from Gillian Hinkle fell short of the net, making the score, 13-7. After miscues by both teams, Talkington would rally back to make it a fivepoint game, 17-12, after Violet Delano served up an ace off of Geldenhuys, but Delano would send a hit out of bounds on the sideline during the next play to give the serve back to Olton with the score, 18-12.
The Lady Warriors would make the score, 19-15, after a serve from Gonzalez fell short of the net, but they could not capitalize, as the next serve from Owuor sailed out of bounds. Smith served up three aces for Olton before sending a serve short of the net to make the score, 23-16.
River Franklin would mistime a hit for Talkington and HalleeKate Huguley set Barbara Gallegos up for a kill to close out set two, 25-16, evening the match, 1-1.
Talkington would win a tight set three, 21-25, but in set four, Owuor sent a hit into the net, before recovering on the next play with a kill off of Geldenhuys to tie the set, 1 -1. Smith responded with a kill off of the block attempt by Owuor, but her tip on the next play was into the net keeping the set tied, 2-2.
A tip on the next play by Gonzalez was hit out of bounds on the sideline by Hawkins and Carly laulualo sent a kill sailing out of bounds for Talkington, stretching Olton’s lead to, 42. A kill from Huguley was tipped out of bounds by Zoe Summerford on the sideline and Smith followed it up with back-to-back kills to extend their lead to, 7-2.
Gonzalez sent a serve sailing out of bounds and laulualo dropped a tip over Synatschk and Huguley for a kill to trim the lead to, 7-4. Smith answered with a kill off of laulualo before sending a serve short of the net to make the score, 8-5. A few plays later, Cortez would sent a kill off of Smith to make the score, 13-9, but the Lady Warriors couldn’t capitalize, as Cortez sent a serve short of the net, giving the serve back to Olton.
Geldenhuys followed it up with an ace, and Smith deliverd a kill off of Owuor’s block attempt for a kill, pushing the lead to, 16-9. Geldenhuys kept it going with an ace, before Talkington ended the rally with the score, 17-10. After miscues from both teams, Owuor delivered a kill for Talkington to make it a sixpoint game, 18-12.
Talkington would rally all the way back to make it a two-point game, 23-21, but Cortez sent a dig into the net to push Olton’s lead to, 2421. A few plays later, Delano sent a serve sailing out of bounds, as Olton evened the match, 2-2, with a, 25-23, win in set four.
The teams went back-andforth through set five, before Talkington pulled away in the end to take the tiebreaker set, 8-15, taking the match, 2-3.
