Lady Wolverines season comes to an end against Wildorado

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team saw their season come to a close on Tuesday night in Hereford, as they fell to the Wildorado Lady Mustangs, 42-31, in the Class 1A Bi-district round of the playoffs.

MaKenna Byrd opened the contest with a put-back off of a miss by Jami Perkins, and Emma Barrett took a steal to the basket for a fast-break lay-up to make the score, 4-0. Sydney Furr got the Lady Wolverines on the board with a lay-up off of the assist from Jasmine Garcia to trim the lead to, 4-2, with 6:43 to play in the opening quarter.

Byrd dropped in a lay-up in transition for the Lady Mustangs, but on the other end, Emma Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Barrett, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws to cut the lead to, 6-3, with 5:13 to play in the game. Halee Toscano hit a cutting Samaron for a lay-up to make it a one-point game, but Byrd answered with a three from the top of the key to push the Wildorado lead back out to, 9-5, with just over four minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Garcia hit Samaron in transition for a lay-up, but Jami Perkins answered with a runner on the right side and followed it up with a jumper from the left elbow to stretch their lead to, 13-7. Toscano responded with a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Samaron to make it a three-point game, as Wildorado took a time out with 2:17 to play in the quarter.

Out of the break, Jovi Perkins was fouled on an attempt by Toscano; she split the free throws and Byrd closed out the quarter with a runner on the left side off the glass to make the score, 16-10, as the first quarter came to a close.

With 6:47 to play in the first half, Barrett took a charge on Toscano, who picked up her third foul of the game, sending her to the bench. Wildorado capitalized on the turnover, as Jami Perkins dropped in a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 18-10. The Lady Wolverines’ though, would not go away lightly, as Taytum Goodman drove to the basket and was fouled on an attempt by Eva Albracht. She converted both free throws, making the score, 18-12, with 5:45 remaining in the half.

Jovi Perkins went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, but Goodman again went strong to the rack on the other end, drawing a shooting foul on Morgan Haschke. She converted both shots at the line and Samaron followed it up with a floater in the lane, off of an assist from Garcia to make it a two-possession game, 20-16. With 3:11 to play in the half, Goodman was fouled on the floor by Haschke, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both shots to make it a two-point game, 20-18.

Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Byrd and sank both free throws to tie the game, 20-20, but with time winding down in the half, Byrd was fouled on an attempt by Goodman and sank both free throws to make the score, 22-20, going into locker room at halftime.

Samaron dropped in a lay-up in transition off of an assist from Goodman to tie the game, 22-22, and Goodman dropped in a fastbreak lay-up off of the outlet pass from Garcia to put the Lady Wolverines in front, 24-22, with 6:37 to play in the third quarter. Jovi Perkins quickly answered with a three from the right elbow to regain the lead for the Lady Mustangs to make the score, 25-24.

Wildorado would go on to close out the third quarter on a, 9-0, scoring run to take a, 34-24, lead into the final quarter of play.

Reyna Segovia split a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and Jovi Perkins followed it up with a three from the right elbow, but on the other end, Goodman was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Segovia, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. Goodman converted all three free throws to make the score, 38-27, with 6:42 to play in the game.

Samaron dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Goodman to cut the lead to single digits, but Byrd answered with a left- handed scoop lay-up to push their lead back out to, 40-29. With 3:35 remainingGoodman was fouled on an attempt by Albracht and made the first free throw, as Wildorado took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Goodman converted the second free throw to cut the lead to nine points, 40-39.

Wildorado dropped in a bucket with three minutes left, as the Lady Wolverines fell in the bi-district contest, 42-31.

The Lady Wolverines were led in scoring by Goodman and Samaron, who netted 13 points a piece. Toscano chipped in three points and Sydney Furr contributed two points in the contest.
