Hornets take down Tulia on the road, 32-22

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team got back into the win column on Friday night with a road win at Tulia, as they took down the Hornets, 32-22.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-3 overall on the year, heading into their bye week.

Haden Provence got Sudan going in the first quarter with a five-yard touchdown run on the quarterback keeper, but they missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 6--0. Tulia would answer, as Jacob Trevino hit Gustavo Trevino for a 5 0-yard touchdown pass that was followed by the PAT to put Tulia in front, 7-6.

Sudan would close out the quarter with a touchdown, as Haden Provence connected with Will Armstrong for the 15-yard score. Sudan would again miss on the two-point conversion, making the score, 12-7, as the first quarter came to a close.

In the second frame, Haden Provence scored on a seven-yard touchdown run, but the PAT was no good, pushing their lead to, 18-7. Tulia would close out the first half with a score, as Jacob Trevino found Jarvis Pastrana for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good, as Tulia cut the lead to, 18-14, going into the locker room at halftime.

Sudan scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter, as Haden Provence hit Dustin Gray for a 38-yard touchdown. The Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, extending their lead to, 24-14, going into the final quarter of play.

Tulia responded to open the fourth quarter, as Jacob Trevino found Adrian Reyes on a 20-yard touchdown pass. Tulia would convert the two-point conversion to cut the lead to, 24-22. However, Angel Martinez would score on a three-yard touchdown run and Sudan would follow it up with a two-point conversion to slam the door on Tulia, taking the contest, 32-22.

The Hornets totaled 425 yards of offense, including 344 rushing yards and 81 passing yards.

Offensively, Haden Provence was 4-4 passing for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 24 carries for 136 yards and two scores on the ground.

In the rushing attack, Kyler Edwards tallied 19 carries for 119 yards, while Martinez finished with 17 carries for 68 yards and a score.

In the receiving game, Gray caught two passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, while Armstrong caught two passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Reno Smith led the team in tackles with seven, while Miles Ledbetter and Bryan Jasso each notched six tackles and Edwards finished with two tackles and one sack. Martinez finished with three tackles and a fumble recovery.
