Lady wolverines rally past kress in OT

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team picked up a huge district win at home on Wednesday over Kress in overtime, 42-38.

With the win the Lady Wolverines improve to 9-14 overall, 3-3 in district play.

Natacia Saldana got the game going for the Lady Roos, as she dropped in a lay- up off of a Springlake-Earth turnover to make the score, 2-0, but Sydney Furr answered with a put-back off of a miss by Emma Samaron to tie the game, 2-2, with 6:29 to play in the opening quarter. With 5:14 to play in the quarter, Paige Bechtold picked up a steal from Halee Toscano and was fouled on the fast-break attempt by Taytum Goodman. She made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 3-2.

Jaikylie Baker dropped in a layup to extend the Kress lead to, 5--2, and the Lady Roos took a time out with 2:21 remaining to prevent a turnover in the back court. With 5.5 seconds to play in the quarter, Sydney Furr was fouled on a putback attempt by Senaida Valdez. She made one-of-two shots to trim the lead to, 5-3, as the first quarter came to a close.

Baker opened the second quarter with a put-back off of a miss by Garcia to push the Kress lead to, 7-3, but Toscano answered with a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Goodman to slice the lead to, 7-6, with six minutes to play in the first half. Goodman followed it up with a drive to the basket, dumping the ball off to Samaron for a lay-up to give Springlake-Earth their first lead of the game, 8-7.

Toscano kept the rally going with a lay-up and Goodman drove to the basket again, dumping the ball off to Samaron for a floater in the paint with 4:03 to play in the half, stretching their lead to, 12-7. Kress took a time out with four minutes to play in the half, and out of the break, Saldana dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 12-9.

On the other end, Goodman was fouled on an attempt by Saldana; she split the free throws and Springlake-Earth took a time out with 1:45 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Sydney Furr was fouled on a put-back attempt by Bechtold; she converted both free throws to extend their lead to, 1510, with under a minute to play in the half. Bechtold dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Searsy, but in the closing seconds of the half, Toscano was fouled on the floor and made both shots on the one-in-one to make the score, 1712, going into the locker room at halftime.

Samaron was fouled on a putback attempt by Baker to open the third quarter; she converted both shots at the line to push their lead to, 19-12. With 5:41 to play in the third, Valdez was fouled on an attempt by Samaron. She sank both shots at the line and Bechtold followed it up with a jumper from the left elbow to cut the lead to, 19-16.

Springlake-Earth took a time out with 4:11 remaining in the third and out of the break, Bentlee Herbert knocked down a runner from the right side to cut the lead to one point, 19-18, with 1:26 remaining in the quarter. Samaron was fouled on a shot attempt by Herbert; she sank both free throws to make the score, 21-18.

Valdez answered with a jumper from the right wing to cut the lead to one point, 21-20, as the third quarter came to a close.

Goodman hit Samaron in transition for a lay-up to open the fourth quarter, but Herbert answered with a lay-up for Kress to keep it a onepoint game, 23-22. Bechtold dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Baker to put the Lady Roos back in front, 24-23, and Baker followed it up with a lay-up on the left side to extend their lead to three points, 26-23.

Aryca Ibarra was fouled on a put-back attempt by Garcia with 4:22 remaining in the game. She missed the first one and made the second, but she was called for a lane violation. On the other side, Baker split a pair of free throws and Saldana followed it up with a lay-up on the right side to push their lead to, 29-23, with three minutes remaining in the game.

Springlake-Earth took a time out with 2:17 to play, and out of the break, Searsy split a pair of free throws, after being fouled on an attempt by Sydney Furr, making the scrore, 30-23.

Kress took a time out with 1:46 remaining and out of the break, Goodman went coast-to-coast for a floater in the lane to cut the lead to five points, 30-25. The Lady Wolverines took a time out with 1:23 remaining to talk things over and Kress called a time out with 47.8 seconds to play in the game.

Out of the break, Goodman was fouled on the floor by Garcia and sank both shots on the one-in-one opportunity to make the score, 3027, with 24.2 seconds remaining in the game. Herbert was quickly fouled on the floor by Sydney Furr to preserve the clock. She sank both free throws to push the lead to five points, 32-27.

With 12.3 seconds to play in regulation, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Bechtold; she converted both free throws to make it a three-point game, 32-29. Garcia was fouled on the floor by Toscano, but missed the front end of the one-in-one opportunity and with 2.1 seconds remaining, Goodman was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Herbert. Goodman made all three attempts at the line to tie the game, 32-32, forcing overtime.

In the extra periord, Valdez scored a put-back off of a miss by Bechtold, but Goodman answered with a three from the right elbow and Samaron followed it up with a jumper from the right wing off of the assist from Goodman, pushing their lead to, 37-34, with 2:19 to play in the game.

Bechtold was fouled on an attempt by Sydney Furr and sank both free throws to cut the lead to one point, but it was short-lived, as Goodman hit Sydney Furr on a back-door cut for a lay-up to push their lead to, 39-36, with 1:46 remaining in overtime. Toscano was fouled on the floor by Saldana and sank both free thorws and with time winding down Goodman split a pair of free throws to make it a six-point game, 42-36.

Kress took a time out with 18.5 seconds remaining and out of the break, Bechtold dropped in a layup off of an assist from Baker, as they fell to the Lady Wolverines in overitme, 42-38.

Goodman led the Lady Wolverines in scoring with 12 points, while Toscano joined her in double-figures scoring with 11 points and Samaron netted 10 points. Sydney Furr added nine points in the contest.

The Lady Wolverines were at Nazareth on Friday to take on the Swiftettes. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Happy.
