Lady Wolverines comeback falls short against Andrews, 38-35

The Lady Wolverines varsity basketball team’s comeback efforts fell short against the Andrews Fillies on Tuesday, 39-35, at the Wildcat Classic.

Jayci Richters dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Kenzie Miller to open the contest for Andrews, but on the other end, Taytum Goodman was fouled on an attempt by Miller, earning a trip to the line. She made one-oftwo shots from the line, and Andrews answered, as Richters dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Shanti Hernandez, pushing their lead to, 4-1.

The score sparked an, 8-0, scoring run for the Fillies, before Halee Toscano knocked down a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Goodman, trimming the lead to, 10-4, with three minutes to play in the opening quarter. Toscano dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Goodman, drawing an and-one foul on Anahi Mejia. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 10-6, and at the buzzer, Jesslyn Espinosa knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left elbow to make the score, 12-6, to end the first quarter.

Espinosa opened the second frame with a lay-up off of the assist from Richters, but on the other end, Toscano was fouled on the floor by Charlize Rondan earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She made oneof- two shots at the line to trim the lead to, 14-7. Hernandez and Richters dropped in back-to-back lay-ups, pushing their lead to, 18-7, as Springlake-Earth took a time out to talk things over with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Out of the break, Goodman found Toscano in transition for a lay-up, as she drew an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw to make it an eight-point game, 18-10, with just under four minutes to play in the half. On their next possession, Toscano was fouled on the floor by Mikylee Morrison. She converted both free throws to make it a two-possession game, 18-12.

Andrews went five-of-six from the free-throw line to close out the first half leading Springlake-Earth, 23-12.

Richters was fouled on an attempt by Toscano to open the second half; she sank both free throws, stretching their lead to, 25-12. Mya Jones split a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Sydney Furr, but Goodman would pick up a steal on the next play, taking it to the hole for a fast-break lay-up, trimming the lead to, 26-14. Goodman scored another lay-up off of a steal, as Andrews took a time out with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Toscano picked up a steal, getting it to Sydney Furr for a lay-up, cutting the lead to, 26-18, with just under four minutes to play in the quarter. Goodman dropped in a lay-up off of anAndrews turnover and she followed it up with a pull-up jumper from the right elbow, off of the assist from Sydney Furr, cutting the lead to, 26-22, with three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Andrews took a time out with 2:59 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break, Karley Colbath dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Sydney Furr. Andrews was called for a lane violation on the free throw, leaving the score, 28-22. Toscano would respond with a three from the right elbow for the Lady Wolverines, and on the defensive end, Goodman forced a 10 second call on Andrews to regain possession.

Andrews, though, would close out the quarter on a, 4-0, scoring run to take a, 32-26, lead into the final quarter of play.

The Fillies would open the fourth quarter on a, 3-0, scoring run, before Toscano buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Aryca Ibarra, trimming the lead to, 35-29. Emma Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Richters and split the free throws to make it a five-point game. On the next play, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Richters and converted both free throws to slice the lead to three points, 35-32, with 2:55 remaining.

Miller knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Toscano and Andrews took a time out with 2:09 remaining. Goodman buried a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Samaron, as they took a time out to set up a defensive play, trailing, 37-35. Miller, though, would split a pair of free throws to ice the game for Andrews, 38-35.

Toscano led the team in scoring with 19 points, and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Goodman, who netted 12 points. Sydney Furr chipped in three points, while Samaron finished with one point in the contest.
