Lady Cats pull away from Fillies in second half to take contest, 47-27

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team stayed unbeaten on the road on Friday in district play, as they took down the Denver City Fillies, 47-27.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 4-0 in district play on the season.

Sydney Roberts opened the contest with a lay-up for Denver City, but Kyndal Edgemon responded with a jumper in the lane to tie the game, 2-2, with 6:35 remaining in the opening quarter. Amiah Elizondo was fouled on an attempt by Natalie Ceniceros and split the free throws to put the Lady Cats in front, 3-2.

With 5:40 remaining in the first quarter, Madison McNeese dropped in a reverse lay-up off of an assist from Edgemon, but with 1:14 remaining in the quarter, Mia Carmona scored on a back-door lay-up to cut the Littlefield lead to one point, 5-4, to end the first quarter.

Arianna Cruz took a charge on Ceniceros to open the second frame and Kennadi Hanlin followed it up with a three from the top of the key off of an assist from Cruz, pushing their lead to, 8-4. Tori Rodriguez responded with a three from the right wing over McNeese to cut the lead back down to one point, 8-7, with 5:10 remaining in the half.

Roberts dropped in a lay-up in transition to gain the lead, 9-8, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:24 remaining in the half. Bella De la rosa dropped in a runner from the right elbow to extend their lead, but Maerysa Saenz answered with a three to tie the game, 11-11. With 2:25 to play in the half, Jazmine Barrios picked up a steal and was fouled on a fast-break attempt by De la rosa. She made one-of-two shots at the line to put the Lady Cats in front, 12-11, and Edgemon followed it up with a jumper from the left wing off of an assist from McNeese to push their lead to, 1411.

With time winding down in the half, Roberts dropped in a lay-up to cut the lead to one point, 14-13, going into the locker room at halftime.

Rodriguez dropped in a reverse lay-up to open the third quarter, but Edgemon answered with a layup on the other end and on the next play, Edgemon followed it up with another lay-up, this time, drawing an and-one foul on De la rosa. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 18-15, with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter.

McNeese drained a three and Edgemon followed it up with a layup to push their lead to, 23-15, with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter. Elizondo poked a ball away that was picked up by Cruz and tossed ahead to McNeese, who was fouled on the fast-break attempt by De la rosa. McNeese sank both free throws and followed it up with a three from the left wing to push the Littlefield lead to, 28-15, with 4:33 to play in the third.

Ceniceros dropped in a lay-up off of a steal, but McNeese answered on the other end with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Ceniceros. She converted the free throw, stretching their lead to, 31-17. With 2:57 remaining in the quarter, Roberts was fouled on an attempt by Cruz; she split the free throws to make the score, 31-18, and Carmona followed it up with a lay-up to trim the lead to, 31-20.

With time winding down in the quarter, Hanlin and Carmona each split a pair of free throws to make the score, 32-21, heading into the final quarter of play.

Edgemon opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of an assist from McNeese, but Serah Woosley answered with a putback for Denver City to make the score, 34-23. McNeese drilled a three from the left wing off of an assist from Cruz and followed it up with a three from the right wing to push their lead to, 40-23, as Denver City took a time out with 5:03 left to play in the contest.

With 4:29 remaining, Ceniceros was fouled on an attempt by Hanlin and converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 40-25, but on the other end, Elizondo dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Edgemon to extend their lead to, 42-25. Ceniceros dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Milka Leyva, but Bri Valdez answered with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from McNeese to extend their lead to, 45-27, with 1:47 remaining. In the closing seconds, Barrios was fouled on the floor by Rodriguez. She made both shots on the onein- one opportunity, as Littlefield took down Denver City, 47-27.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McNeese who tallied 19 points, and she was joined in double-figures by Edgemon, who netted 12 points. Hanlin tallied four points, while Barrios, Elizondo, Saenz and Valdez each finished with three points.

The Lady Cats hosted Brownfield on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday with a road game against Dimmitt.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
