Amherst holds off Indians, 53-49

The Amherst Bulldogs’ varsity basketball team took down the Morton Indians in Amherst on Friday, 53-49.

Amherst netted 14 points in the first quarter and outscored Morton, 9-7, in the second frame to take a, 23-16, lead into the locker room at halftime.

Amherst added 14 points in the third quarter, including eight points from Isaac Herrera, stretching their lead to, 37-26, going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs were able to hold off Morton, despite a 23-points outburst from the Indians, to take the district contest, 53-49.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Isaac Herrera, who netted 17 points and Joel Garcia, who added 14 points. They were joined in double- figures scoring by Gabriel Garcia, who finished with 11 points. Kevin Garcia tallied eight points, while Hector Perez added one point and Oscar Medrano finished with one point in the contest.
