S-E takes down Kress, 60-14, to finish regular season

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team took down Kress at home on Friday, 60-14, to earn their second consecutive District title.

With the win, the Wolverines cap off the regular season with an overall mark of 8-1, 4-0 in district play.

The Wolverines opened the contest with a defensive score, as senior, Evan DeLeon, picked up a fumble and took it the other way for a touchdown. The kick after was no good, leaving the score, 6-6. Kress would respond with a five-yard touchdown through the air to tie the game, 6-6, after their missed kick.

Later in the first quarter, junior running back, Braxton Ethridge, rushed for a oneyard touchdown and the kick after was good, extending their lead to, 14-6. they would add one more score before the end of the opening quarter, as Ethridge connected with Dereck Rosalez for a 50-yard touchdown through the air. The kick after was good, making the score, 22-6, as the first quarter came to a close.

DeLeon kept the air raid going in the second quarter, as he found senior, Trace Goodman, on a 36-yard pass for a touchdown to stretch their lead to, 28-6, after the missed kick. DeLeon would follow it up with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Rosalez that was followed with the kick after to make the score, 36-6.

Cain Tovar got in on the scoring for Springlake-Earth, as he rushed for a two-yard touchdown, followed by the kick, pushing their lead out to, 44-6. The Wolverines’ offensive barrage continued, as Ethridge hit Goodman with a 16-yard passing touchdown to make the score, 52-6, after the kick.

Kress would break free for a 40-yard rushing touchdown, but the Wolverines would score once more to close out the first half, as Ethridge rushed for the 13-yard score that was followed by the kick after, as they 45’ed the Kangaroos, 60-14.

The Wolverines totaled 313 yards of offense, including 223 passing yards and 90 rushing yards.

DeLeon finished the game four-of-six passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while Ethridge finished three-of-three passing for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior fullback, Roel Fuentes, led the rushing attack with four carries for 33 yards, while senior fullback, Keshan Holmes, tallied six carries for 23 yards and Ethridge added four carries for 20 yards and two scores. Tovar also had three carries for 17 yards and a score.

In the receiving game, Rosalez tallied three catches for 139 yards and two touch downs, while Goodman contributed two catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Ethrdige also had one catch for 31 yards.

Defensively, DeLeon had a scoop-and-score touchdown to go along with an interception and three assists, while Holmes recovered a fumble to go along with four total tackles and Goodman recorded a fumble recovery and an interception, while adding six total tackles.

Rosalez led the defense with eight total tackles, while fuentes tallied seven, including one for loss and Tovar finished with four total tackles.

The Wolverines will play the Happy Cowboys at Bulldog Stadium in Anton on Thursday in the 1A Division I-Six-Man first round of the Play-offs.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
