Wolverines claim District 3-1A title with, 29-11, win over Buffaloes

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team defeated the Petersburg Buffaloes on Saturday, 29-11, to claim the District 3-1A Championship.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 6-6 overall, 4-2 in district play.

Springlake-Earth jumped out to a, 4-1, lead after the first inning and added three runs in the top of the second inning to stretch their lead to, 7-1. The Wolverines were held scoreless in the top of the third inning, while Petersburg scratched two runs across to trim the lead to, 7-3.

The Wolverines would bounce back in the top of the fourth inning, as they pushed three runs across to extend their lead to, 10-3. The Buffaloes would not be denied, as they too added some runs, moving five runners across home plate to slice the lead to, 10-8.

Springlake-Earth would outscore the Buffaloes, 1-0, in the fifth inning, but Petersburg would return the favor in the sixth, outscoring the Wolverines, 2-0, to make the score, 11-10. In the top of the seventh, though, the Wolverines’ offense erupted for 18 runs, while holding Petersburg to just one run in the bottom half of the side to take the contest, 29-11.

Offensively, Davey Crandall had five hits and five RBI’s on the day, while Josh Samaron tallied three hits and six RBI’s. Tyler Tanaro had two hits, while Evan DeLeon had three walks on the day and Slade Beerwinkle finished with five RBI’s.

Evan DeLeon pitched 3.1 innings for the Wolverines earning eight strikeouts, while Xayvier Mosqueda pitched two innings and Josh Samaron pitched 1.2 innings earning two strikeouts.

The Wolverines hosted Floydada on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will play O’Donnell on May 5 th in the Bi-District round of the 1A Baseball Play-offs. Time and venue are TBA.
