The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team took down the Friona Chieftains on the road on Tuesday night, 41-20, to improve to 13-8 overall, 6-3 in district play.

Senior forward, Tyree Jones, tipped the opening tip-off to senior forward, Chris Brown, for a quick lay-up to open the contest. Brown followed it up with a jumper from the left wing and Jones kept the scoring going with a put-back off of a miss by senior point guard, Jeremiah Salazar, to make the score, 6-0, with 6:25 remaining in the opening quarter.

Bryan Chavira dropped in a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Jones. The free throw was no good, leaving the score, 6-2. David Martinez followed it up with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Chavira, cutting the Littlefield lead to one point, 6-5.

Kaden Jeter dropped in a layup off of the assist from Martinez, giving Friona their first lead of the game, 7-6, with just over four minutes to play in the first quarter. Jones quickly regained the lead for Littlefield with a lay-up, but on the other end, Chavira was fouled on an attempt by Salazar. He converted both free throws, giving Friona the lead, 9-8, as the first quarter came to a close.

Jones scored a put-back off of his own miss to open the second quarter and Brown was fouled on their next possession by Bautista. He converted both free throws to extend the Littlefield lead to, 12-9. Brown dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Jeter. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 14-9.

With 5:21 remaining in the first half, Jones grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on a putback attempt by Andrew Husted. He converted both free throws to push their lead out to, 16-9. Chavira split a pair of free throws, but junior, Jaron Cabello, answered with a lay-up, making the score, 18-10, as the Chieftains took a time out with 3:49 remaining in the half to talk things over.

Out of the break, Brown dropped in a lay-up on the right side, off of the assist from Cabello, stretching their lead to double-digits, 20-10. With 1:36 remaining in the half, junior wing, Ethan Garcia, was fouledon the floor by Chavira earning a trip to the line. He made one-of-two shots at the line to extend the lead to, 21-10.

Jeter split a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 10 points, but on the other end, Brown was fouled on the floor by Martinez; he made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 22-11, going into the locker room at halftime.

Friona opened the third quarter with a basket, but Brown responded with a jump-hook shot in the lane and followed it up with a lay-up, off of the assist from Jones, pushing their lead to, 26-13, with 4:22 remaining in the quarter.

Martinez took a charge on junior guard, Jordan Trevino, but Brown delievered a block on Husted and took it the other, drawing a foul on the fast-break on Chavira. He converted both shots at the line, extending their lead to, 28-13.

With under one minute to play in the quarter, Trevino buried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Brown, stretching their lead to, 31-13, heading into the final quarter of play.

Jeter split a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and with just under six minutes remaining, Jared Rejino dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 31-16. Trevino scored a lay-up off of a steal and Jones stole an inbound pass from Friona and drew a shooting foul on Martinez. He converted both free throws, making the score, 35-16.

Husted was fouled on an attempt by Trevino and split the free throws, but Cabello banked in a three, off of the assist from Salazar and Trevino followed it up with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Brown, pushing their lead to, 41-18.

Rejino dropped in a lay-up on the left side, but the Wildcats took the contest, 41-20.

Brown led the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points and was joined in double-figures by Jones, who finished with 10 points. Trevino netted eight points and Cabello added five points.

Garcia also finished with one point in the contest.

The Wildcats hosted Brownfield on Friday. Results were not avaialble at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Muleshoe.

Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m.
