Wildcats drop nail-biter to lamesa, 53-52

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team dropped a nail-biter on Friday at home to Lamesa, 53-52.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-14 overall, 1-3 in district play.

Jordan Trevino tossed a pass inside to Tyrell Norman, who dropped in a lay-up to open the game for Littlefield. Robert Dimas answered with a lay-up for Lamesa, but Norman responded with a transition bucket to put the Wildcats up, 4-2, with 5:44 remaining in the opening quarter.

Chip Green knocked down a short jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Norman, but Lluke Martinez answered with a put-back to cut the lead to, 6-4, with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter. Norman dropped in a put-back off of the miss by Jaron Cabello and Cabello followed it up with a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Jordan Trevino, making the score, 11-4.

With 3:35 remaining in the quarter, Green dropped in a layup off of a steal, as Lamesa took a time out with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. Out of the break, Keeton Bolton was fouled on an attempt by Cabello. He made one-of-two shots at the line to trim the lead to, 13-5.

Omar Martinez took a charge on Braidon Morales and the Wildcats capitalized on the extra offensive possession, as MJ Randle dished the ball to Norman for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 15-5. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Bolton dropped in a put-back, drawing an and-one foul on Green. He converted the free throw to make the score, 15-8.

Jordan Trevino took a charge on Luke Martinez and Green hit Omar Martinez on a cut to the basket for a lay-up to make the score, 17-8, as the first quarter came to a close.

Robert Dimas took a charge on Omar Martinez to open the second quarter, but the Wildcats were able to regain possession, as they took the ball strong to the basket for a lay-up to push their lead out to, 19-8. Lamesa took a time out with 7:26 remaining and out of the break, Pedro Barrioz drained a three from the top of the key and followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow to slice the lead to, 19-13, with six minutes remaining in the first half.

Luke Martinez scored a lay-up off of a steal, but Ethan Garcia answered with a lay-up on the other end, drawing an and-one foul on Barrioz. He missed the free throw and Lamesa answered, as Luke Martinez drained a three from the left wing to cut the lead to, 21-18. Garcia responded with a three form the left wing, off of the assist from Green, as Lamesa took a time out with 4:36 remaining in the half.

Out of the break, Morales drained a three from the right elbow and Christian Ruiz dropped in a lay-up to tie the game, 23- 23, with 2:49 remaining in the half.

Jordan Trevino knocked down the pick-and-pop jumper from the top of the key, off of the screen from Norman and on their next possession, he was fouled on the floor by Morales, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He converted both free throws to push their lead back out to five points, 28-23.

Norman took a charge on Ruiz, but Lamesa came right back, as Barrioz dropped in a lay-up in transition to make it a threepoint Littlefield lead, 28-25. With under one minute to play in the half, Jordan Trevino was fouled on the floor by Barrioz. He converted both free throws to make it a five-point game, 30-25.

With time winding down in the quarter, Jordan Trevino went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, making the score, 32-25, going into the locker room at halftime.

The teams exchanged buckets to open the second half and Omar Martinez dropped in a floater from the left side to make the score, 36-27. Luke Martinez answered with back-to-back three for the Golden Tornadoes to slice the lead to, 36-33, with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter.

Lamesa took a time out with 6:16 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break, Omar Martinez dropped in a bucket to make the score, 38-33. With 3:48 remaining in the quarter, Morales dropped in a lay-up in transition, off of the assist from Luke Martinez and Luke Martinez followed it up with a lay-up on the right baseline, making the score, 38-37, with 3:32 remaining in the quarter.

Jordan Trevino answered with a jumper from the right wing, but Tristian Maxwell responded with a put-back to make the score, 40-39, with 2:11 left to play in the quarter. Norman knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Omar Martinez, but Luke Martinez responded with a runner in the lane to make the score, 42-41, going into the final quarter of play.

Morales opened the final quarter with a lay-up in transition to put Lamesa in front, 43-42, and Luke Martinez followed it up with a lay-up in transition to extend their lead to, 45-42. Green answered with a three from the left wing to tie the game, 45-45, as the Wildcats took a time out with 6:11 left to play in the game.

Out of the break, Norman took a charge on Luke Martinez, but on their next possession, Luke Martinez drained a three from the left wing to make the score, 48-45. With under five minutes left to play, Omar Martinez passed to Cabello who sent the touch pass to Norman for a layup to cut the lead to, 48-47, but Lamesa answered again, as Ruiz dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Robert Dimas, making the score, 50-47.

Littlefield took a time out with 3:06 left to play and out of the break, Cabello sent a pass to Norman to quickly dished it to Omar Martinez, who dropped in the lay-up, making the score, 50- 49. Norman took a charge on Morales with 2:20 remaining and the Wildcats capitalized, as Green buried a three on the other end to put them back in front, 52-50.

After a pair of Lamesa time outs, Normaned blocked a shot by Luke Martinez and the defensive rebound was gathered by Jordan Trevino, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Littlefield called another time out to prevent a five-second call on the inbound play. Norman was fouled on the floor by Robert Dimas with 10,8 seconds to play. He missed the free throw and Luke Martinez went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to tie the game, 52-52.

With 1.8 seconds remaining, Littlefield turned the ball over on the inbound, giving Lamesa possession under their own basket with 1.1 seconds left to play in the game. They got the ball in bounds and Bolton was fouled on an attempt by Jordan Trevino. He missed the first shot, but made the second to ice the game, 53-52.

Norman led the way for the Wildcats with 16 points, while Jordan Trevino netted 11 points and Green tallied 10 points. Omar Martinez chipped in six points, while Cabello tallied five points and Garcia finished with four points in the contest.

The Wildcats traveled to Muleshoe on Tuesday for their first district meeting with the Mules. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season next Tuesday with a road game against the Dimmitt Bobcats.
