Sudan falls to Abernathy in Overtime, 63-55

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team fell to the Abernathy Lady Lopes on Tuesday in overtime, 63-55.

With the loss, the Nettes fall to 2-2 overall on the season.

Sudan won the tip off, as the first quarter got underway. Junior, Addison Boehning, drove to the basket, drawing a shooting foul on Chani Chambers, earning a trip to the line. Boehning missed the first shot, but converted the second to put the Nettes in front, 1-0. Boehning scored a put-back off of the miss by sophomore, Gracyn Shultz, making the score, 3-0.

Abernathy answered with a put-back by Mayra Martinez off of her own miss to make the score, 3-2, with 6:15 remaining in the opening quarter. Sophomore, Stevi Lockhart, knocked down a short jumper in the lane off of the assist from Boehning, but on the other end, Mayra Martinez was fouled on a shot attempt by Shultz. She missed both shots at the line, but Mayra Martinez dropped in a put-back to make it a one-point game, 5-4, with 5:36 remaining in the quarter.

Shultz picked up a steal and dished it ahead to Boehning for a lay-up in transition, as Abernathy took a time out with 4:50 to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Chanie Chambers knocked down a three from the top of the key to tie the game, and on their next possession she hit Charlee Chambers for a lay-up to give Abernathy their first lead of the game, 9-7.

With just under three minutes to play in the first quarter, sophomore, Elaine Martinez, drained a three from the left elbow to put Sudan back in front, 10-9. However, the Lady Lopes took it right back down the court, and Mayra Martinez dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Charlee Chambers, putting Abernathy back in front, 11-10.

Mayra Martinez dropped in another lay-up off of an assist from Leah Villarreal to make it a threepoint Abernathy lead, but the Nettes quickly answered, as Lockhart took the pass from junior, Liz Sital, and drove the left side for a lay-up, making the score, 13-12, with just over one minute to play in the first quarter.

Khaki Dubose hit Carlye Sandoval on a two-on-one against Shultz to extend their lead to, 15-12. With time winding down in the quarter, Chanie Chambers buried a three and followed it up with a fast-break lay-up, pushing their lead out to, 20-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

Chanie Chambers scored a layup off of a steal to open the second quarter and Dubose followed it up with an assist to Avery Harris for a lay-up in transition to extend their lead out to 12 points, 24-12. Sophomore, Braelyn Pointer, drained a three from the left wing, drawing an and-one foul on Mayra Martinez, earning a chance for a four-point play. She missed the free throw, but was able to get the offensive rebound and the putback to slice the lead to, 24-17, with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

With 5:40 remaining in the half, Charlee Chambers was fouled on an attempt by Sital; she made the first and missed the second, making the score, 25-17. Sophomore, Sydney Cornelius, buried a three from the left wing and Shultz followed it up with a three from the left elbow to make it a one-possession game, 25-23.

Chanie Chambers answered with a three from the right elbow, but Shultz answered right back for Sudan with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Boehning, keeping it a one-possession game, 28-26.

With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Mayra Martinez dropped in a lay-up off of an inbound play and Chanie Chambers went coast-to-coast on their next possession for a lay-up, making the score, 32-26.

Cornelius drained another three from the right elbow for Sudan, as Abernathy took a time out with 1:48 to play in the half. Out of the break, Boehning knocked down a bank jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Lockhart to make it a one-point game, 32-31.

Two-possessions later, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Dubose with 19.12 seconds remaining in the half. She split the free throws to tie the game, 32-32, but in the closing seconds, Mayra Martinez dropped in a lay-up to put the Lady Lopes up, 34-32, going into the locker room at halftime.

Shultz knocked down a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Boehning to open the third quarter, giving the Nettes the lead, 35-34. With 5:28 remaining in the quarter, Chanie Chambers was fouled on an attempt by Sital, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws, as Sudan took a time out with 4:53 to play in the quarter, trailing the Lady Lopes, 36-35.

Out of the break, Chanie Chambers dropped in a lay-up to extend their lead to, 38-35. Chambers made four consecutive free throws to push their lead to, 42-35, with 3:50 to play in the quarter, but on the other end, Boehning dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Mayra Martinez. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 42-37.

Charlee Chambers and Chanie Chambers each made a pair of free throws for the Lady Lopez, but the Nettes answered, as Pointer knocked down a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Elaine Martinez, cutting the lead to six 46-40.

Abernathy closed out the third quarter with back-to-back buckets to make the score, 50-40, heading into the fmal quarter of play.

Chanie Chambers dropped in a transition lay-up to open the fourth quarter, but Lockhart answered with a jumper from the right elbow, off of the assist from Pointer, making the score, 52-42. Abernathy took a time out to avoid a five-second call and out of the break, Chanie Chambers was fouled on the floor by Elaine Martinez. She converted both free throws, and on the other end, Shultz was fouled on an attempt by Sandoval. She took converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 54-44, with 5:20 to play in the game.

Boehning picked up a steal under their own basket and rolled it to Lockhart on the other side of the basket, who put it in for the lay-up, cutting the lead to, 54-46. With 3:24 remaining Dubose was fouled by Pointer, but missed both free throws. A jumpball went in favor of Sudan.

Boehning split a pair of free throws and the Nettes took a time out with 2:15 remaining in the contest. With 1:34 remaining, Lockhart buried a three from the right elbow, off of the inbound pass from Sital, making it a four-point game, 54-50.

Sital followed it up with a layup off of a steal and Abernathy turned the ball over with 1:08 remaining in the contest. Lockhart connected with Boehning, who dropped in a lay-up to tie the game, 54-54.

Boehning delivered a block with 34 seconds to play in the contest and the Nettes took a time out with 7.26 seconds remaining. Out of the break, the Nettes were unable to find the basket, as they headed to overtime.

In overtime, the Nettes were outscored, 9-1, as they fell to Abernathy, 63-55.

Lockhart led the team in scoring with 12 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block, while Boehning chipped in 12 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, six steals and one block.

Shultz tallied 11 points, to go along with three rebounds, three steals and one assist, while Cornelius added six points and one rebound. Pointer netted eight points, to go along with five rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Sital added three points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals and Martinez chipped in three points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The Nettes hosted Nazareth on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Monday with a home game against the Canyon Randall Lady Raiders.
