Stevy Smith wins week nine Football Contest

The Week nine edition of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is in the books with Stevy Smith taking first place with a mark of 19-1.

Sam Castillo, Tommy Cloninger and Jay Lee tied for second with a mark of 18-2. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score between the 49ers and the Patriots, which was 39 points.

Sam Castillo ended up in second place with a guess of 43 points, while Tommy Cloninger placed third this week with a guess of 45 points, edging out Lee, who guessed 58 points.

In the high school ranks, Sundown shutout Hale Center, 30-0, while Springlake-Earth 45’ed Petersburg on the road, 74-28. Olton throttled Sanford-Fritch, 58-28, while Amherst 45’ed Cotton Center, 46-0.

Bushland took down Dalhart, 37-21, while River Road won a lowscoring game over Muleshoe, 7-0. Idalou routed Stanton, 56-8, while Sudan edged out 42-35. Abernathy took down Roosevelt, 28-12 and Whitharral took down Lazbuddie, 58-14.

In the college ranks, Notre Dame blasted Pittsburgh, 45-3, while North Carolina took down North Carolina State, 48-21, and Ohio State took down Nebraska, 52-17. Oklahoma State survived a scare from Iowa State, 24-21. The Florida vs Missouri game, was wrong and given to all contestants as a freebie.

In the NFL, Baker Mayfield led a furious comeback for the Browns, as they took down the Bengals, 37-34. The Saints edged out the Panthers, 27-24, while the Steelers handed the Titans their first loss of the season, 27-24.

The Packers took down the Texans, 35-20, while the Cardinals took down the Seahawks, 37-34.

Those who finished 17-3 this week were Alma Castillo, Donna Neinast, Ivan Estrada and James Hood, while Brenda Herrell, David Neinast, Ed Dabrowski, Evan Barrera, Jan Smith, Johnny Rosemond, JR Herrell, Kay Cloninger, Lonnie Neinast and Teresa Dabrowski each finished 16-4.

Devin Jones, Floyce Pierce, Jimmy Davis Sr., Junior Garcia, Larry Ashley and Mark Grace each finished 15-5 this week, while Charlie Smith, Jimmy Davis Jr., Lucas Casas Jr., Lyndel Evans, Marcus Garcia, Nancy Smith and Oscar Sanchez each finished 14-6.

Bobby Cunningham, Devin Garcia, Dewayne Hayes, Robin Elliott and Terrill Moorhead each finished 13-7, while Missy Cunningham finished 12-8 this week.

In the overall standings, Lonnie Neinast leads the pack in first place with 156 points, while Tommy Cloninger sits in second place with 152 points and David Neinast is in third place with 151 points. JR Herrell is in fourth place with 148 points, while Lee and Grace are tied for fifth with 147 points each.

Stevy Smith and Kay Cloninger are tied for sixth with 146 points, while Pierce is in seventh with 145 points. Estrada, Jan Smith and Nancy Smith are tied for eighth with 144 points, while Donna Neinast and Marcus Garcia are tied for ninth with 142 points and Rosemond rounds out the top 10 with 141 points.
