Olton Mustangs pull away late from Wolverines, 34-20

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team improved to 3-0 on Friday with a, 34-20, victory over the Texico, N.M. Wolverines at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs totaled 384 yards of total offense; 270 rushing yards and 114 passing yards, while also forcing six turnovers on defense.

Texico scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter on a twoyard run, but they missed the PAT, leaving the score, 6-0, heading into quarter number two. Olton would answer in the second quarter, as Baldo Garcia scored on a five-yard touchdown run that was followed with the PAT from Logan Lassiter to put the Mustangs in front, 7-6, going into the locker room at halftime.

Out of the break, the Wolverines would score again on a 26yard touchdown run, but missed the two-point conversion leaving the score, 12-7. Olton would answer, as Lassiter connected with Jake Soliz for a 25-yard touchdown pass to put the Mustangs up, 1312, after the missed PAT by Lassiter.

Texico would score once more to end the third quarter, this time from five-yard out, but again they missed the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 20-13, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, though, the Mustangs took over. Lassiter broke free on a 51-yard touchdown run to regain the lead for the Mustangs and nailed the PAT to tie the game, 20-20. Garcia followed it up with a 13-yard touchdown run and after the PAT by Lassiter, the Mustangs led, 27-20. The Mustangs would close out the game with a pick-six, as they took the contest, 34-20.

Lassiter finished the game 1022 passing for 114 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing 10 times for 168 yards and a score.

Garcia finished with 18 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns, while Christian Chancy finished with three carries for 35 yards.

In the receiving game, Soliz tallied five catches for 62 yards and one touchdown, while Joel Olivas Jr., added three catches for 29 yards and Eric Valencia finished with one catch for 20 yards.

The Mustangs will host Bovina on Friday for Homecoming.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
