The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team dropped their first game of pool play on Thursday morning at the Hub City Tip-off Clasic at Frenship High School, as they fell to Coronado, 70-51.

With the loss, the Nettes fall to 0-1 in pool play, 1-3 overall on the season.

Senior, Gracyn Shultz, opened the game with a three from the left wing off of the assist from senior, Stevi Lockhart, but Jannae-Leigh Cooper answered with a mid-range jumper from the right elbow to trim the lead to, 3-2, with just under seven minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Kya Smith dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw to put the Lady Musangs in front, 5-3. Smith dropped in another layup off of a long pass from Shy’la Blackwell, but Lockhart answered with a lay-up to cut the Coronado lead to, 7-5, with 5:42 remaining in the quarter.

Coronado took a time out with 4:31 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break Cooper knocked down a mi-range jumper from the left wing and Trista Arnold followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Smith to stretch their lead to, 11-5, with 2:29 left to play in the quarter. Lockhart knocked responded with a deep three from the right elbow off of the assist from Elaine Martinez on the inbound play and Lockhart followed it up with a pull-up three from the top of the key to tie the game, 1111.

With just over one minute remaining in the first quarter, Blackwell was fouled on an attempt and converted both free throws to put the Lady Mustangs back in front, 13-11, but senior, Landree Gonzales, buried a three from the right wing off of the assist from Shultz to put the Nettes in front, 14-13. Coronado took a time out with 38.16 seconds to play in the quarter and out of the break, Lockhart knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left wing to make it a three-point Sudan lead, 16-13.

In the closing seconds of the quarter, Cooper dropped in a layup from the right side to cut the lead to, 16-15, heading into quarter number two.

Lockhart knocked down a deep two from the left corner off of the assist from Shultz, but Jazlyn Braithwaite answered with a pullup jumper from the left wing and followed it up with a steal that led to a fast-break lay-up to put the Lady Mustangs back in front, 1918, with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

Lockhart used a screen to pull up for a jumper from the top of the key, but Smith answered with a jumper from the left wing on the other end to tie the game, 21-21. Sophomore, Edette Herrera, was fouled on an attempt and converted both free throws to give Sudan a brief lead, but it was shortlived, as Cooper dropped in a reverse lay- up and Jayla McCutccheon picked up a steal that led to a fast-break lay-up, putting Coronado back in front, 2523, with under five minutes to play in the half.

Herrera banked in a jumper for Sudan from the right elbow, but Cooper responded on the other end with a lay- up to keep Coronado up a possession, 27-25. With 4:09 remaining in the half, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Cooper and knocked down both free throws to tie the game, 27- 27, but on the other end, Braithwaite dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Addison Andrews and Blackwell used a dribble drive to get to the basket for a lay-up to put Coronado up, 31-27.

Senior, Kambry Tolbert, buried a three from the right wing off of the assist from Shultz, but Coronado answered with a quick bucket to keep it a three-point game, 33-30. Tolbert drove to the basket for a lay-up with under one minute remaining in the half, but Cooper dropped in a put-back at the buzzer off of the miss from Blackwell to Put Coronado up by three at the half, 35-32.

Lockhart hit Shultz with a bounce pass on the backdoor cut for a lay-up to open the second half, but Smith answered with a lay-up for Coronado to make the score, 37-34. Gonzales was fouled on an attempt by Smith and sank both shots at the line to make it a one-poin game, but Coronado again answered, as Braithwaite knocked down a jumper from the left wing to extend their lead to, 39-36, with 6:21 to play in the third quarter.

Blackwell pulled up for a jumper from the left elbow and Braithwaite scored a fast-break lay-up off of a steal, as Sudan took a time out with 5:37 to play in the quarter, trailing Coronado, 43-36. Out of the break, Smith was fouled on a putback try and split the free throws to make it an eight-point game, but Lockhart was able to end the scoring drought for Sudan, as she knocked down a turnaround jumper from the right elbow to trim the lead to, 44-38.

Alyssa Villalobos drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Cooper and Cooper pick-pocketed Lockhart, taking it the other way for a fast-break layup to push their lead to, 52-38. Sudan called another time out with 2:44 remaining and out of the break, senior, Braelyn Pointer, drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Shultz, cutting the lead to, 52-41.

With under one minute to play in the quarter, Smith picked up a steal from Herrera and took it the other way for a lay-up and in the closing seconds of the quarter, Cooper was fouled on a put-back attempt and converted both free throws to stretch their lead to, 5641, as the third quarter came to a close.

Gonzales opened the fourth quarter with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Shultz, but Blackwell answered with a layup and Smith followed it up hitting Braithwaite in transition for a lay-up to make the score, 60-44. Cooper was fouled on a put-back attempt by Shultz and converted both free throws, but Herrera answered with a three from the right elbow on the other end to make the score, 62-47, with just over four minutes to play in the contest.

Coronado took a time out and out of the break, Lockhart buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Shultz to slice the lead to, 62-50, with 2:45 remaining. Braithwaite dropped in a lay-up and on their next possession, Villalobos dropped in a lay-up on the left side to make the score, 6650. Coronado would close out the game on a, 4-1, scoring run to take the contest, 70-51.

Lockhart led the Nettes with 22 points, to go along with two assists, one rebound and one steal, while Gonzales tallied nine points and one assist. Herrera chipped in seven points and two rebounds, while Tolbert contributed five points, three rebounds and two steals.

Shultz tallied five points, six assists and two steals, while Pointer added three points and one rebound. Rodriguez and Montes each contribtued an assist and Martinez finished with one rebound, one assist and one steal.
