The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team fell to the Tascosa Lady Rebels on Thursday afternoon, 66-40, at the Hub City Tip Off Classic at Frenship High School.

With the loss the Nettes fall to 0-2 in pool play, 1-4 overall on the season.

Tascosa opened the contest on a, 6-0, scoring run, before senior, Stevi Lockhart knocked down a turnaround jumper from the right wing to make the score, 6-2, with 6:31 remaininig in the openingquarter. La’Kenzee Dickson answered with a three from the right wing, but Sudan fired right back, as senior, Gracyn Shultz, buried a three from the right wing, off of the assist from sophomore, Edette Herrera, trimming the lead to, 11-5.

Avery Carter scored a lay-up in transition for Tascosa, but Lockhart responded with a turnaround jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from junior, Melo Rodriguez, trimming the lead to, 13-7, with 3:16 remaining in the opening quarter. Lockhart knocked down a pull-up jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from junior, Blessy Montes, but Tascosa answered with a quick basket to make the score, 15-9.

Aniyah Brackens dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on senior, Braelyn Pointer, with 2:18 to play in the quarter. She converted the free throw to push their lead out to, 18-9. On the other end, Pointer was fouled on an attempt by Daizjia Oages; she split the free throws to trim the lead to, 18-10, with 1:44 to play in the quarter.

With under 10 seconds to play in the quarter, J.J. Brown dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Saphina Stanley, but with less than one second remaining in the quarter, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Stanley. She sank both free throws to make the score, 20-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

Dickson drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Tryssa Dowd for a jumper in the lane to open the second quarter, but senior, Landree Gonzales, answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Shultz to trim the lead to, 22-14, to begin the second quarter. Dowd knockd down a jumper in the lane off of an inbound pass and Dickson followed it up with a three from the top of the key, as Sudan called a time out with 4:21 remaining in the half, trailing the Lady Rebels, 27-14.

Out of the break, Za” Miyah Dickson was fouled on a jumper attempt by Elaine Martinez. She split the attempts, stretching the lead to, 28-14. Rodriguez grabbed a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up and Gonzales followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Shultz, cutting the lead to, 28-19, with 3:16 to play in the half.

Shultz knocked down a runner from the elbow to cut the lead to, seven points, 28-21, as Tascosa called a time out with 2:12 remaining in the half. Out of the break, Dowd dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Za”Miyah Dickson to push the lead back out to, 3021. Pointer buried a three from the top of the key for Sudan and with under one minute to play in the half, senior, Kambry Tolbert, was fouled on an attempt by Oages. She split the free throws and Tascosa closed out the half with a transition lay-up by Dowd to take a, 32-25, lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Rebels opened the second half on a, 6-0, scoring run, before Shultz dropped in a lay-up for Sudan, drawing an and-one foul on Za”Miyah Dickson. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 38-27, with 5:31 to play in the quarter. Tascosa went on another, 5-0, scoring run, that ended when a save by Elektra Rowlan went to Lockhart, who dropped it in for a quick lay-up to trim the lead to, 43-29, with 3:11 remaining in the third.

Devaeh Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws, after being fouled by Herrera and Oages hit Dowd in transition for a lay-up, before Lockhart answered with a turnaround jumper from the right elbow to make the score, 47-31, with 1:42 remaining in the quarter. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Johnson buried a three from the elbow and Brown dropped in a lay-up to close out the third quarter with Tascosa on top, 52-31.

Lockhart hit Shultz on a backdoor cut for a lay-up to open the fourth quarter, but Oages answered with a three from the elbow and La’Kenzee Dickson dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Gonzales. She converted the free throw to push their lead to, 58-33, with just over six minutes to play in the game.

Pointer knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left wing, but Oages answered with a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line to make the score, 60-35. La’Kenzee Dickson was fouled on the floor, sending her to the line for a onein- one opportunity; she sank both shots at the line, making the score, 62-35. Herrera was fouled on an attempt by La’Kenzee Dickson and split the free throws, making the score, 62-36.

With under two minutes to play, Gonzales split a pair of free throws for Sudan, and on the other end Dowd was fouled on a secondchance try by Lockhart. She knocked down both shots at the line to push their lead to, 64-37, with 1:30 to play in the game. Shultz knocked down a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Pointer, but Johnson closed out the game with a fast-break lay-up, off of the assist from Rowlan, as Tascosa took down Sudan, 66-40.

Shultz led the team in scoring with 13 points, to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Lockhart tallied 12 points, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Pointer tallied six points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Gonzales chipped in five points, two rebounds, one steal and one block.

Rodriguez contributed two points, one rebound, one assist and one steal, while Tolbert tallied four rebounds, one point and one assist, and Herrera added one point and one assist. Martinez added one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block, while Montes finished with one rebound and one assist.

The Nettes played Idalou and Randall on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their seaosn on Tuesday with a road game against the Lubbock Christian Lady Eagles.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
