Nancy Smith wins first week of Football Contest

Most high school football teams around the state made it through the first week of their season this past Thursday and Friday and with that, came our first of the annual Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest.

The contest came down to the tie-breaker this week, as we had three contestants: Lonnie Neinast, Mark Grace and Nancy Smith, finish with a high score this week of 16 points. The tie-breaker game was the total score between Iowa Park and Holliday, which was 28 points.

Nancy Smith guessed the closest with 42 points, while Mark Grace finished second with a guess of 44 points and Lonnie Neinast finished third with a guess of 50 points.

The Littlefield Wildcats handed the Dimmitt Bobcats a, 56-0, beat down, while Sudan rallied past Olton on the road, 37-27. Amherst took down the Lubbock Home School Titans, 60-36, while the Springlake-Earth Wolverines won their six-man debut over Whitharral, 58-42. Owls, 50-38.

There was a scheduling change for Levelland, who ended up playing Andrews instead of Plainview, so everyone received a free pass for that game.

Shallowater took down Abernathy, 26-6, while Dumas took it to Seminole, 48-8, and Idalou crushed Denver City, 41-7. Pampa took down Elk City, 49-21, while Dalhart defeated Perryton, 19-8, and Spearman throttled Stratford, 42-6.

Vega shutout Highland Park, 32-0, while Childress blasted Panhandle, 68-45, and Farwell won a low-scoring affair over Ralls, 7-0. Sundown took down the Muleshoe Mules, 6-0, while Slaton downed Snyder, 20-14. Friona won their opener over Brownfield, 26-13,while Tulia bested Floydada, 28-26, and Canadian hung 70 on West Texas, 77-26.

Those who finished 15-5 this week were, David Neinast, Dewayne Hayes, JR Herrell and Thomas Blackstone, while contestants who finished 14-6 include, Floyce Pierce, Ivan Estrada, Johnny Rosemond, Kay Cloninger, Larry Ashley, Marcus Garcia,Minnie Trevino and Terrill Moorhead.

13-7 finishers this week include Jay Lee, Jim Davis Jr., Ronald Williams and Tommy Cloninger, while Bobby Cunningham, Devin Garcia, Evan Barrera, Jimmy Davis Sr., and Stevy Smith each finished 12-8 this week.

Those who went 11-9 this week are Donna Neinast, Junior Garcia, Lucas Casas, Robin Elliott and Sam Castillo, while Alma Castillo and Oscar Sanchez each finished 10- 10 and Floyd Trevino finished 9- 11 this week.
