Mustangs take down Whirlwinds, 39-27

The Olton Mustangs’ took down the Floydada Whirlwinds, 39-27, to secure the number two seed coming out of District 22A D-I.

With the win, the Mustangs finish the season 6-4 overall, 32 in district play.

The Mustangs totaled 492 yards of total offense; including 384 passing yards and 108 rushing yards.

Andres Mendoza got things going in the opening quarter with an 18-yard rushing touchdown. The PAT by Leo Mendoza was good, putting the Whirlwinds in front, 7-0. However, Olton would score on a three- yard rushing touchdown by Christian Chancy, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 7-6, heading into the second frame.

Andres Mendoze broke loose on the ground to open the second quarter, rushing for a 70 yard touchdown run. The PAT by Leo Mendoza was good, putting the Whirlwinds in front, 146. Olton would again answer, as senior quarterback, Logan Lassiter, dropped back and hit Andrew Martinez for a 73-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion try to tie the game was no good, leaving the Mustangs behind, 14-12.

Tyrean Henderson dropped back on the Whirlwinds next possession and found Andres Mendoza for a 58-yard touchdown pass and the PAT was good, pushing their lead to, 2112. Just before halftime, Lassiter would drop back and hit senior, Joel Olivas Jr., for a 30- yard touchdown pass. The Mustangs, though, again missed on the two- point conversion try, making the score, 21-18, in favor of Floydada going into the locker room at halftime.

Olton opened the third quarter with another touchdown through the air, as Lassiter found Osvaldo Rodriguez for the 45-yard score. The PAT was good, putting the Mustangs in front, 25-21. Olton would add on to their lead later in the quarter, as Lassiter found Martinez on a six-yard touchdown pass, which was followed by the PAT to extend their lead to, 32-21, heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Lassiter hit senior, Jake Soliz for a sevenyard touchdown pass to extend their lead to, 39-21, after the PAT. Floydada would score later in the fourth quarter, as Henderson found Saul Reyes for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good, as Olton took down the Whirlwinds, 39-27.

Lassiter finished 27-42 passing for 384 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He also five carries for 22 yards on the ground.

Fabian Gutierrez led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 46 yards, while Christian Chancy tallied 12 carries for 40 yards and one touchdown.

In the receiving game, Olivas Jr., led the team with nine catches for 140 yards and one touchdown, while Martinez tallied three catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns and Soliz added 12 catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. Osvaldo Rodriguez contributed one catch for 45 yards and one touchdown and Nathan Urbina had two catches for 18 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs had two sacks as well as a fumble recovery.

The Mustangs will be in Littlefield on Thursday to take on Farwell in the Class 2A Bidistrict round of the play-offs. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
