The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team won their second game on Thursday at the Lamb County Classic, as they took down Kress, 14-3, in five innings.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 1-1 in tournament play on the weekend.

In the top of the first inning, Olton pitcher, Victor Reyes, got Dillon Morphis to pop up to Adolfo Garcia at first base in foul territory for out number one. Malachi Guzman grounded out to Cole Montgomery at shortstop for out number two, but Jordan Burns singled past Fabian Gutierrez at third base to give the Kangaroos a base runner.

Burns took second on a past ball, before Jayden Galvan singled to left field to put runners on the corners for Kress with two outs. Galvan stole second on a pitch, before Drew Morphis drilled a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap to put Kress in front, 2-0. Reyes would get Adrian Saldana to ground out to Gutierrez at third to retire the side.

In the home-half of the first inning, Jacob Marquez led off for the Mustangs with a single over shortstop and he took second on a pitch to move into scoring position for Olton. Marquez, though, would get picked off at second by Drew Morphis for out number one. Montgomery singled up the middle and ended up on third on an error by the center fielder.

Garcia hit a sacrifice grounder to Galvan at first to score Montgomery, cutting the lead to, 2-1, with two outs. Jett Tomsu doubled to right field on an error by the right fielder and Alan Vasquez popped up to the first-base side, but the ball fell between Burns and Drew Morphis, as Jett Tomsu scored from second to tie the game, 2-2.

Vasquez took second on a pitch, but Jaxon Tomsu lined out to Burns at first base to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Riley Bradshaw grounded out to Garcia at first base for out number one, and Kraegen Pesina struck out looking for out number two. Jaleel Baker was hit by a pitch to give Kress a base runner and he took second on a balk by Reyes, before Dillon Morphis hit an RBIdouble into right field on an error by Vasquez, putting Kress back in front, 3-2.

The Mustangs would recover, as Guzman hit a shot to Gutierrez at third, who threw to first for the out to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the second inning, Reyes struck out swinging to lead things off for the Mustangs, but Raymond Ramirez singled on an error by Pesina at shortstop and Gutierrez followed it up with a hit-and-run that made it through the let side, putting two runners on for Olton.

Marquez singled through the left side to load the bases and Montgomery laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Galvan, who got the out at first, as Ramirez scored and the runners advanced to second and third with the game tied, 3-3. Garcia hit a two-RBI single up the middle and took second on the throw home, as the Mustangs took the lead, 5-3, before Jett Tomsu flew out to left field to end the inning.

The Mustang defense settled in in the third inning, after Burns singled under the glove of Montgomery at shortstop. Reyes got Galvan to strike out looking for out number one and he was awarded second on a balk by Reyes, before Drew Morphis drew a walk for the Kangaroos.

Saldana singled through the right side, but he rounded first and was tagged out by the Mustangs for out number two. Reyes would get Bradshaw to strike out swinging, stranding two runners on base for Kress.

In the bottom of the third, Vasquez singled on an error by Baker in right field and Jaxon Tomsu drew a walk. Vasquez and Jaxon Tomsu advanced to second and third on a pitch, before Reyes laid down a two-RBI bunt on the third-base line, making the score, 7-3. Emmitt Nelson came on as the courtesy runner for the pitcher and took second on a pitch, before Ramirez struck out swinging for out number one.

Gutierrez singled on an error by Pesina at shortstop to drive in a run, making the score, 8- 3. Marquez drew a walk and Montgomery laid a bunt down on the third-base side and was safe on an error by Guzman to load the bases for Olton. But, Garcia would pop up to Drew Morphis on the mound and Jett Tomsu flew out to left field to end the inning.

Reyes and the Mustang defense made quick work of Kress in the top of the fourth inning, as Pesina popped up to Gutierrez at third base for out number one and Calin Teeple struck out swinging for out number two. Dillon Morphis trippled on a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Ramirez.

Guzman was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Kress, but Burns grounded out to Montgomery, who threw to first for the out to retire the side.

Vasquez was hit by a pitch to begin the home-half of the fourth inning and he took second on a pitch and third on a ball away from the catcher, before Jaxon Tomsu missed a bunt on strike three for out number one. Reyes hit an RBIgrounder to third and was safe at first on a drop by Galvan, as Nelson came on as the courtesy runner for the pitcher with the score, 9-3.

Noe Mendoza struck out looking for out number two, as Nelson advanced to second on a steal. Gutierrez singled on an error by Dillon Morphis at shortstop and he took second on the throw home, as Nelson scored to push their lead to, 10-3. Marquez made it to first on a dropped third strike that got by the catcher, as Gutierrez took third on the play putting runners on the corners for Olton.

Marquez took second on a play and Gutierrez scored on a bad fake throw down to second by Burns, stretching the lead to, 11-3. Montgomery followed it up with an RBIsingle through the left side to make the score, 12-3. Montgomery took second on a pitch, before Garcia drove an RBI- double through the right side on the throw home from right field. Diego Gallegos came on as a pinch runner.

Jett Tomsu sent an RBI-single over shortstop and took second on the throw home from the outfield, as Olton extended their lead to, 14-3. Vasquez would ground out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Olton would keep the Kangaroos off the board in the top of the fifth to take the contest, 14-3.

Reyes pitched a complete game for the Mustangs, throwing five innings, giving up four walks and three runs, while earning four strikeouts.
