Mustangs shutout Hornets, 49-0

The Olton Mustang’s varsity football team won a shutout over the Sudan Hornets on Friday, 49-0, in their home-opener.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 1-0 overall on the season, while the Hornets fall to 0-1.

The Mustangs struck first in the opening- quarter, as Cristian Chancy scored from four-yard out. Logan Lassiter followed it up with the PAT for the only score of the quarter, putting Olton in front, 7-0.

Olton erupted in the second quarter, as Lassiter hit Jake Soliz for a 34-yard touchdown pass and followed it up with the PAT to stretch their lead to, 14-0, to begin the second quarter. The Mustangs would strike again in the second, as Lassiter connected with Joel Olivas for a 14-yard touchdown, pushing their lead to, 21-0, after the PAT.

Lassiter would strike again through the air, as he found Olivas, again, this time for a 15-yard touchdown to put the Mustangs up, 28-0, following the PAT by Lassiter. Chancy would close out the first half with a one-yard touchdown run to put Olton in front, 35-0, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Chancy would find the end zone for the third time in the contest, as he punched it in from three yard out and Baldo Garcia would close out the game in the fourth quarter with a nine-yard score, as Olton took the contest, 49-0.

The Mustangs totaled 424 yards of offense, including 311 passing yards and 113 rushing yards. Lassiter completed 18-28 passes for 300 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while Andrew Martinez was one-of-one for 11 yards.

Chancy led the rushing attack with nine carries for 31 yards and three touchdowns, while Garcia added, 14 carries for 53 yards and one score. Jason Granillo also had seven carries for 22 yards.

In the receiving game, Soliz finished with eight catches for 156 yards and one touchdown, while Olivas added six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Brennon Huguley had three catches for 35 yards, Eric Valencia had one catch for 17 yards and Osvaldo Rodriguez finished with one catch for 11 yards.

Defensively, Jacob Marquez led the team in total tackles with 16, including seven solo and one for loss, while Damian Marquez tallied 11 total tackles including two solo and two for loss. Chancy chipped in 10 tackles, while Aldo Vasquez finished five tackles. The Mustangs also had a fumble recovery.

The Hornets totaled 92 yards of offense, including eight passing yards and 84 rushing yards. Trent Wilson finished two-of-16 passing for eight yards, while adding 20 carries for 16 yards.

Josh Cevera tallied seven carries for 35 yards, while Marcello King added eight carries for 33 yards. Alan Flores had one catch for five yards, while Sal Juarez finished with one catch for three yards.

Defensively, Jesus Salas finished with seven total tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss, while Matthew Lopez added nine total tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss and Joel Williams chipped in five total tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss. Drew Carr contributed 12 tackles, while Jaden Conley finished with 10 tackles and Juarez and Cevera each finished with nine tackles.

Kaleb Robinson had an interception for the Hornets and Juarez also recovered a fumble.

The Mustangs will be at Dimmitt this Friday to take on the Bobcats, while the Hornets will travel to Tahoka to take on the Bulldogs.

Both games are slated to kickoff at 7 p.m.
