The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team won their first gold football since 2009 last week when they took down New Deal, 35-33, in the Class 2A Bi-district round of the football play-offs.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 8-3 overall on the season.

“Last week’s victory against New Deal was an important win for our team,” Head Coach Ross Lassiter said. “We were able to win our first playoff game since 2009. The last several weeks have given out team confidence in their ability to win big games.”

He added, “Offensively we were able to mix up the run and the pass and play really balanced football. Defensively, we did an excellent job of running to the ball and preventing the big play. We were also able to come away with two interceptions.”

This week the Mustangs turn their attention to Cisco, who they will be taking on in the Area Round play-off game on Friday.

“Cisco has a really good team,” Coach Lassiter said. “They are a run first team on offense and they have a sophomore quarterback that really makes them go. They will line up in multiple formations and run right at you.”

He added, “Defensively, they run a 4-3 and are very stout up front. We will need to do a good job of mixing the run and the pass again this week to keep us in the game.”

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday at Colorado City High School.
