Lady Wolverines fall short against #5 Rankin

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team picked up a game during their open date against the TABC 5th ranked Rankin. They fell to the Lady Devils, 82-,61, in their neutral site contest at Ira.

With the loss, the Lady Wolverines fall to 9-4 overall on the season.

The teams were deadlocked through the first two quarters, each scoring 18 points in the first quarter and 15 points in the second quarter, making the score, 33-33, going into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Wolverines pulled ahead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Wolverines, 22-16, to take a, 55-49, lead into the locker room at halftime. In the fmal frame, the Lady Wolverines poured in 12 points, but the Lady Devils knocked down five bombs from behind the arc to take the contest, 82-61.

Head Coach Jeri Been Goodman stated, “We played them tough for three quarters, but their star hitting those five three’s in the fourth quarter killed us, but I think it was a great learning experience for our girls.”

The Lady Wolverines were led by junior, Sayler Beerwinkle, who finished with 29 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and one steal. Senior, Carsann Baker, tallied 14 points, five rebounds, one assist and four steals, while sophomore, Kani Holmes, chipped in eight points, five rebounds, four assists, five steals and one block.

Freshman, Taytum Goodman, contributed four points, five rebounds, four assists and 11 steals, while sophomore, Halee Toscano, tallied four points, four rebounds, one assist and seven steals. Junior, Micaela Fuentes, chipped in two points, two rebounds and two steals, while Mahalia Delgado, added three rebounds, three assists and one steal and freshman, Sydney Fun, finished with one rebound and one assist.

The Lady Wolverines hosted Cotton Center on Tuesday in their return to district play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Friday with a home game against Lazbuddie.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
