The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday night with a, 51-31, victory over Friona at Wildcat Gym to close out the first round of district play.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 6-6 overall, 5-1 in district play.

Littlefield freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, was fouled on back-to-back plays by Kambree Kimbrough to open the contest. She converted all four free throws to put the Lady Cats up, 4-0 to start the cotnest. With 3:48 remaining in the first quarter, Audrianna Trevino was fouled on an attempt by junior, Ashtyn Parker; she made one-of-two shots at the line to get the Squaws on the board.

Sophomore, Madison McNeese, knocked down a jumper from the left elbow and followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal to stretch the Littlefield lead to, 8-1. With 2:32 remaining in the quarter, Edgemon tossed a pass to McNeese, who threw it across the lane to freshman, Arianna Cruz, who finished the play with a lay-up to make the score, 10-1.

Cruz followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from McNeese, stretching the lead to, 13-1, as the Squaws took a time out with 2:04 remaining in the quarter.

With under one minute to play in the first quarter, Edgemon scored a put-back off of a miss by McNeese, drawing an and-one foul on Trevino. She missed the free throw, but junior, Brookelyn Gau, was there for the offensive rebound, as the Lady Cats set the offense back up, looking for one final shot to close out the quarter.

Zoe Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Kimbrough; she split the free throws, making the score, 16-1, as the first came to a close.

Senior, Geyah Garza, picked up a steal in their own end and passed it to a driving McNeese for a lay-up to make the score, 18-1, with 7:43 remaining in the first half. McNeese was fouled on the floor by Anahi Gonzales, and was forced to leave the game. Garza shot the technical free throws, making both shots to extend the lead to, 20-1.

Gonzales scored a lay-up in transition for Friona, but Cruz answered with a lay-up for Littlefield, making the score, 22-3. Edgemon drove the lane for a lay-up off of the assist from junior guard, Emily Champion, but on the other end, Sharlene Maldonado was fouled on an attempt by Champion. She converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 24-5, with 4:22 remaining in the half.

Cruz split a pair of free throws for Littlefield after being fouled by Gonzales, but Mags Licerio drained a three from the left elbow for the Squaws to cut the lead to, 25-8. Littlefield quickly answered, as Garza drove the lane for a lay-up, making the score, 27-8.

With under one minute to play in the half, Trevino hit Kimbrough down low for a layup, as she drew an and-one foul on Parker. She converted the free throw, but in the closing seconds, Mahalia Huey dropped in a lay-up to extend the lead to, 29-11, as the first half came to a close.

Garza picked the pockets of Trevino, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up to open the third quarter. She drew an and-one foul on Trevino, but missed the free throw, leaving the score, 31-11, with 5:43 remaining in the quarter. Gonzales knocked down a short jumper from the right side for Friona, but Garza answered with a three from right wing, pushing their lead out to, 34-13.

Kimbrough knocked down a jumper from the right wing, but on the other end, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Licerio. She made one-out-oftwo shots at the line, making the score, 35-15. Trevino knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, but Gau answered with a jumper from the left wing for the Lady Cats, stretching their lead to, 37-17.

Garza knocked down a jumper from the right wing and Garcia split a pair of free throws to close out the quarter with the Lady Cats in front, 40-17.

Champion hit Garza on a back-door cut for a lay-up to open the fourth quarter, but Gonzales answered with a layup to make the score, 42-19. Cruz buried a three from the right elbow to stretch the lead to, 45-19, and Edgemon followed it up with a put-back off of the miss by Garza, making the score, 47-19, with 5:22 left to play in the game.

Parker kept the scoring run going with a jumper from the right wing off of the assist from Edgemon, but Emily Amaya scored a put-back to trim the lead to, 49-21. Garza sank a pair of free throws, as Littlefield went on to beat Friona, 51-21.

Garza led the team in scoring with a game-high 16 points, while Cruz netted 11 points and Edgemon finished with 10 points.

McNeese tallied six points, while Gau, Garcia, Huey and Parker each finished with two points.

The Lady Cats were at Lamesa on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a home game against the Muleshoe Lady Mules.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
