LADY CATS TAKE DOWN BOBBIES, 56-28

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Dimmitt Bobbies on the road on Tuesday night, 56-28, to improve to 5-5 overall, 4-0 in district play.

The Bobbies won the tip-off, as Michelle Ontiveros dropped in a lay-up to open the game for Dimmitt, but on the other end, freshman, Kyndal Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from junior guard, Brookelyn Gau, tying the game, 2-2.

Edgemon followed it up with another lay-up off of the assist from sophomore, Madison McNeese, but the Bobbies responded, as JC Sepeda was fouled on an attempt by McNeese. She made one-of-two shots at the line to make it a one-point Littlefield lead, 4-3.

With five minutes to play in the opening quarter, Gau was fouled on an attempt by Faby Perez. She split the free throws and on the next play, Edgemon was fouled on an attempt by Ontiveros. She too split the free throws leaving the score, 5-3.

McNeese followed it up with a deep three from the top of the key, as the Bobbies took a time out with 2:08 left to play in the first quarter. Out of the break, Analyce Robertson drew a blocking foul on junior guard, Emily Champion. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 8-4, with just over one minute to play in the quarter.

Champion lobbed a pass over the defense to Edgemon, who dropped it in for a lay-up, but on the other end, Mataley Bonilla was fouled on the floor by Edgemon and split the one-in-one opportunity, making the score, 10-5, as the first quarter came to a close.

Gau knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line to open the second quarter, and McNeese drove the lane for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Kaylee Lujan. She converted the free throw to stretch their lead to, 15-5. With just under five minutes remaining in the first half, Sepeda was fouled on an attempt by Gau’ she missed the first shot, but made the second, making the score, 15-6.

McNeese responded for Littlefield with a put-back off of a miss by senior guard, Geyah Garza, extending their lead to, 17-6. On their next possession, Garza was fouled on the floor by Kraselle Ramirez; she sank both free throws and on the next play, Edgemon earned a trip to the line after being foul on an attempt by Ontiveros. She split her free throws, making the score, 20-6.

With 3:18 left to play in the first half, Edgemon scored a put-back off of a miss by Gau and Gau followed it up with a lay-up of her own, making the score, 24-6. Gau dropped in a put-back and on the next play, freshman, Arianna Cruz, was fouled on the floor by Kaylee Melendez. She split the attempts to make the score, 27-6.

The Bobbies closed out the half with a bucket to make the score, 27-8, going into the locker room at halftime.

Perez opened the second half with a lay-up for Dimmitt, but McNeese picked up a steal and scored on a lay-up and followed it up with a lay-up on the fast-break, pushing the Littlefield lead out to, 31-10. On the other end, Perez was fouled on an attempt by junior, Ashtyn Parker; she converted both free throws, but McNeese answered with a drive to through the lane for a lay-up, making the score, 33-12, with 5:57 remaining in the third quarter.

Dimmitt answered with a bucket, but Gau responded with a lay-up off of the assist from Garza, stretching their lead to, 35-14. Littlefield took a time out to prevent a turnover with 4:57 remaining in the quarter and out of the break, McNeese picked up a steal and knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left elbow, making the score, 37-14.

Bonilla drained a jumper from the left wing and Sepeda scored a layup off of a turnover by Champion, but on the other end, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Ontiveros. She converted both free throws, pushing their lead back out to, 39-18.

Dimmitt took a time out with 1:11 remaining in the quarter and out of the break, Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of a steal, making the score, 41-18. Leilani Solis was fouled on an attempt in the closing seconds of the third quarter by Ontiveros. She made one-of-two at the line, making the score, 42-18, as the third quarter came to a close.

Edgemon hit Parker for a jumper from the left wing to open the fourth quarter, but Dimmitt answered with a lay-up, making the score, 44-20, with 7:08 left to play in the game. Sepeda split a pair of free throws after being fouled on the floor by McNeese, but Cruz answered with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Garza, making the score, 47-21.

Dimmitt answered with a lay-up, but Edgemon responded with a lay-up of her own off of the assist from McNeese. Gau followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, but Ontiveros stopped the run for Dimmitt with a lay-up, making the score, 51-25, with just under three minutes left to play in the game.

Champion split a one-in-one opportunity at the line and Mahalia Huey was fouled on an attempt by Perez, sending her to the line for free throws. She made one-of-two at the line, making the score, 53-25.

Perez dropped in a lay-up for Dimmitt off of the assist from Bonilla, but Littlefield responded again, as Cruz split a pair of free throws, making the score, 54-27. Robertson split a pair of free throws for Dimmitt, but Gau closed out the game, going two-of-four from the line in the final 30 seconds, as Littlefield took the contest, 56-28.

McNeese led the Lady Cats in scoring with 16 points, while Edgemon joined her in double-figures scoring with 14 points and Gau finished with 12 points. Cruz chipped in five points, while Garza contributed four points and Parker finished with two points.

Huey, Solis and Champion each added one point in the contest.

The Lady Cats were at Brownfield on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will close out the first round of district play on Tuesday at home against Friona.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
