LADY CATS TAKE DOWN BOBBIES, 47-22

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Dimmitt Bobbies in their second meeting of the season on Tuesday, 47-22.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 9-6 overall, 8-1 in district play.

Junior guard, Brookelyn Gau, opened the contest with a steal, as she took it the other way for a lay-up to put the Lady Cats out in front, 2-0. Faby Perez answered with a lay-up for Dimmitt to tie the game, with 7:07 remaining in the opening quarter.

Junior guard, Emily Champion, buried a three from the left wing off of the assist from senior guard, Geyah Garza, and Champion followed it up with a steal, drawing a shooting foul on JC Sepeda. She made one-of-two shots at the line, pushing their lead to, 6-2.

Haylee Melendez picked up a steal and got it ahead to Michelle Ontiveros in transition for a lay-up to trim the lead to, 6-4, but Garza answered with a a drive and kick over to freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, for a lay-up to make the score, 8-4.

With 3:38 remaining in the first quarter, Champion knocked down a deep two from the right wing off of the assist from sophomore, Madison McNeese and Mahalia Huey was fouled on their next possession earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to stretch their lead to, 12-4.

With just over one minute to play in the quarter, Kelly Chavez was fouled on an attempt by Zoe Garcia; she split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 12-5, as the first quarter came to a close.

Dimmitt took a time out with 5:24 to play in the second quarter and out of the break, McNeese buried a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Champion, stretching their lead to, 15-5. Ontiveros answered with a three from the left wing to cut the lead to, 15-8, and two possessions later, Sepeda was fouled on the floor by McNeese earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She sank both free throws, making the score, 15-10, with 2:55 remaining in the first half.

Sepeda was fouled again on the floor by McNeese with 2:29 left to play in the half. She split the free thorws to make it a twopossession game, 15-11. After a pair of missed free throws by Champion, Sepeda was fouled on an attempt by Gau and split the free throws, making it a three-point game, 15-12.

On the other end, Gau was fouled on an attempt by Sepeda and sank both free throws to make the score, 17-12, with 1:16 remaining in the half. Garza knocked down a pull-up jumper from the right elbow, but in the final minute of the half, Perez was fouled on a put-back attempt by Huey. She sank both free throws to make the score, 19-14, going into the locker room at halftime.

Edgemon drove the left side of the basket for a lay-up to open the second half and Garza followed it up with a jumper from the right wing off of the assist from Gau, as Dimmitt called a time out with 6:37 to play in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Huey dropped in a bucket for the Lady Cats and Gau dropped in a putback off of the miss by junior, Ashtyn Parker, pushing their lead out to, 27-14. Dimmitt answered with a lay-up, but on the other end, Huey was fouled on an attempt by Nataley Bonilla. She made one-of two shots at the line, extending the lead to, 28-16.

With just under four minutes to play in the quarter, Huey was fouled on an attempt by Ontiveros; she split the free throws leadving the score, 29-16. Chavez was fouled on an attempt by Garcia and split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 29-17. But, Littlefield answered as freshman, Arianna Cruz, hit Gau on a backdoor cut for a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 31-17.

Garcia followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Gau, as the Bobbies took a time out with 1:40 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, a missed free throw by Chavez send the game into the fourth quarter with Littlefield out in front, 34-17.

Garza split a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter, and Bonilla answered with a three from the right elbow for Dimmitt. Perez followed it up with a layup off of the assist from Kaylee Lujan, cutting the lead to, 35-22, but McNeese responded with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Garza making the score, 38-22.

With 2:26 remaining in the contest, Garza picked up a steal on the Dimmitt inbound play and was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Melendez. She sank both free throws pushing their lead out to, 40-22.

On the next play, Gau stole an inbound pass and dropped it in for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Alyssa Monreal. She converted the free throw to extend the lead to, 43-22. Gau dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Garza and Garza closed out the game with a pullup jumper from the right wing, as the Lady Cats took down the Bobbies, 47-22.

The Lady Cats were led by Gau, who netted 13 points and Garza who chipped in nine points. McNeese, Champion and Huey each finished with six points, while Edgemon tallied four points and Garcia finished with three points.

The Lady Cats were at Denver City on Friday for their second meeting of the season with the Fillies. Results were not available at press time. They will be at Friona on Tuesday as district play winds down.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
