LADY CATS FALL TO LADY CUBS IN STRAIGHT SETS

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team dropped their road match against the Brownfield Lady Cubs on Saturday, 0-3, in their second meeting of the season.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 4-3 in district play.

After the serve by junior, Brynna Ray, to open the first set, Gabi Fields lofted up a set, but on the tip, Kamryn Martinez was called for being across the net, making the score, 1-0. The Lady Cubs drew even on the next play, as Tia Johnson had a kill tipped out of bounds by junior, Emily Champion, making the score, 1-1.

Littlefield sent a hit out of bounds, but a hit into the net by Fields on the next play, kept things tied up, 2-2. Junior, Ellie Lopez, served up an ace off of Abcde Garcia and senior captain, Geyah Garza, followed it up with a kill off of Garcia to extend their lead to, 4- 2.

Junior, Ashtyn Parker sent a kill out of bounds, but the Lady Cubs couldn’t capitalize, as Martinez too sent a kill sailing out of bounds to make the score, 5-3. Garza’s serve on the next play went unreturned, as the Lady Cubs took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Tia Johnson scored a kill off of the block attempt by Parker, but Madison Hord’s serve landed out of bounds, making the score, 7-4. Deja Johnson answered with a kill off of Champion and Brianne Franco followed it up with a kill off of the set from Fields, making the score, 7-6. Dabria Blackwell served up

Dabria Blackwell served up back-to-back aces to give Brownfield the lead, before sending a serve short of the net to tie the set, 8-8. The Lady Cubs responded with a three-point rally before a tip by Fields was blocked by freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, making the score, 9-11.

Tricia Torres sent a serve sailing out of bounds and the Lady Cubs again responded with a three-point rally, pushing their lead out to, 10-14, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Tia Johnson hit a ball into the net, but Lopez’s serve on the following play sailed out of bounds, making the score, 11-15. Tia Johnson dropped a kill just inside the back line, but Blackwell sent back-to-back hits out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 13-16.

Littlefield’s struggles at the serve line continued, as Garza’s serve sailed out of bounds. On the next play, Edgemon was called for crossing the net on a hit, making the score, 13-18. Champion broke the serve by Hord, but Deja Johnson was there for the tip kill at the net to extend their lead to, 13-19.

Kimbreigh Edwards sent a kill past Champion, but Parker responded with a kill that Alexis Herrera couldn’t get to for the dig, trimming the lead to, 14-20.

Junior, Danielle Zapata, served up an ace off of Meriah Gonzalez and Gonzalez sent a kill sailing out of bounds on the next play, cutting the lead to, 16-20, before Edwards dropped a kill inside the back line.

Gonzalez’s serve was short of the net and Champion followed it up with an ace off of Gonzalez, cutting the lead to, 18-21, but the Lady Cubs would close out the set on a, 4-1, scoring run to take set one, 19-25.

Set two was tight through the first couple of sequences but Brownfield would create several multi-point rallies to take the set, 6-25, to go up, 2-0 in the match.

The Lady Cats’ fortunes didn’t get much better in set three, as they dropped the set, 9-25, falling to the Lady Cubs, 0-3.
