LADY CATS FALL TO DENVER CITY IN FIRST MEETING OF SEASON

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team fell to the Denver City Fillies on Saturday, 0-3, in their first meeting of district play. With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 1-1 in District Play The Lady Cats fell into an early hole, dropping the first set, 8-25, and second set, 7-25.

In set three, junior, Ashtyn Parker, had a kill tipped out of bounds by Maddy McElroy and a misting hit by the Fillies on the next play, had the Lady Cats up, 2- 0. But, Denver City would answer, as McElroy delivered a kill off of the block attempt by sophomore, Madison McNeese, making the score, 2-1.

A tip by McNeese on the next play didn’t make it over the net, and sophomore, Kayleigh Logan, sent a hit into the net on the following play, giving Denver City the lead, 3-2. McElroy served up an ace to.make it a two point Fillie lead, before sending her next serve short of the net making the score, 3-4. Marley Jordan scored a kill off of senior, Hannah Ballejo, and McNeese sent a kill over the back line on the next play, making the score, 3-6. Junior, Danielle Zapata, had her tip blocked by Melissa Soto, and the ball was hit out of bounds on the cover by senior, Geyah Garza, making the score, 3- 7. Littlefield was called for four hits st set to on the next play, forcing Head Coach Claire Head to take a timeout, trailing the Fillies, 3-8. Out of the break, Jordan’s serve was short of the net and McNeese followed it up with an ace inside the back line for the Lady Cats, trimming the lead to, 5-8.

The teams exchanged points until Parker was called for touching the net on a block attempt, making the score, 7-11. Karley Moore served up back-to-back aces, before Garza delieverd a kill in front of the block attempt by Ivy, trimming the lead to, 8-13. McElroy sent a kill out of bounds and Logan had a tip hit out of bounds by Sydney Roberts, cutting the lead to, 10-13. On the next play, Logan was blocked by Ivy for a kill, but Shamicha Wilson answered, as she tipped the net with a hit for a kill. Garza followed it up with an ace in front of Moore and McNeese kept the run going with a block for a kill on the hit by Jordan, making the score, 13-14. McElroy had her tip blocked by Wilson, but she was not able to keep it in play, as it landed out of bounds for a Fillie point. Wilson would respond for the Lady Cats, as she sent a kill past Moore, but, Denver City would answer with a four-point rally to make the score, 14-19, before Jordan sent a kill out of bounds to make it a four-point game.

The Fillies went on to close out the set on a, 6-2, scoring run to take set three, 17-25, and the match 0-3.

The Lady Cats hosted Lamesa on Tuesday at Wildcat Gym, as district play continued. Results were not available at press time. They will be at Friona on Saturday as district play continues.
