Lady Cat volleyball falls to Brownfield, 0-3

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team fell to the Brownfield Lady Cubs on Saturday, 0-3, in their first meeting of district play.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 4-2 in district play.

Alexis Herrera got the Lady Cubs off to a, 0-5, start, including three aces, as the Lady Cats called a time out to try and stop the Lady Cubs’ momentum. Out of the break, junior, Ashtyn Parker, delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Meriah Gonzalez, to get the Lady Cats on the board, 1-5.

The Lady Cubs, however, went on another eight-point scoring run, to make the score, 1-13, as the Lady Cats called for another time out. Out of the break, a tip by sophomore, Kaeleigh Logan, was hit into the foul pole by Gonzalez, making the score, 2-13.

Dabria Blackwell dropped in a tip for a kill off of the block attempt by Littlefield and the Lady Cats were called for four hits on the next play, making the score, 2- 15. Sophomore, Madison McNeese, sent a kill out of bounds, but senior captain, Geyah Garza, dropped in a tip that was dug by Gabi Fields, but she slid across the net for a Littlefield point.

Junior, Brynna Ray’s, serve was short of the net on the next play, making the score, 3-17. A hit by junior, Emily Champion, was tipped at the net by Brianne Franco before falling in for a Littlefield point, making the score, 4-17.

Deja Johnson scored a kill off of Ray, but on the next play, Deja Johnson was called for touching the net on a kill attempt, making the score, 5-18.

Garza’s serve was hit into the net by Fields, but a tip by Fields on the next play was hit out of bounds by the Lady Cats, pushing the lead back out to, 6-19. McNeese scored a kill on the following play and Tia Johnson was blocked by Logan on the next play, but the ball landed out of bounds for a Lady Cubs’ point, making the score, 7-20.

Tia Johnson scored a kill for Brownfield, but Gonzalez landed across the net on a tip, trimming the lead to, 8-21. The Lady Cubs would close out the set on a, 1-4, scoring run, making the score, 9- 25.

In set two, junior, Danielle Zapata, had her serve broke by Lindsey Herrera, but Parker was there for the kill at the net to put the Lady Cats in front, 1-0. Tia Johnson answered with a kill for Brownfield and Gonzalez followed it up with a kill that was tipped out of bounds by Garza, making the score, 1-2.

Madison Hord sent a hit over the back line to tie the set, 2-2, but Fields set Tia Johnson up with a kill off of Champion to put the Lady Cubs back out in front, 2-3. Fields served up an ace off of McNeese, before sending her next serve into the net, making the score, 3-4.

The Lady Cats couldn’t capitalize, as McNeese sent her serve sailing out of bounds. Garza was called for a double hit on the next play, stretching the Lady Cubs’ lead to, 3-6. Fields set Deja Johnson up for a tip that floated over the Littlefield block attempt for a kill and Garza had a swing blocked by Gonzales and Deja Johnson for a kill to extend their lead to, 3-8.

Hord tipped the net for an ace on the next play and Gonzalez and Kimbreigh Edwards followed it up with back-to-back kills to make the score, 3-11. Garza sent a hit into the net, but the Lady Cubs were called for four hits on the next play, making the score, 4-12.

McNeese sent a hit too close to the net for the team to play off of a swing from Gonzalez and Gonzalez followed it up with an ace to extend their lead to, 4-14. Junior, Ellie Lopez, scored a kill off of the block attempt from Deja Johnson and Edwards and Deja Johnson, on the next play, hit a ball into the net, trimming the lead to, 6-14.

Garza blocked Deja Johnson at the net and the second-chance try was hit into the net by Hord, making the score, 7-14. Deja Johnson sent a kill try out of bounds, but she followed it up with a kill off of Tricia Torres, making the score, 8- 15. Littlefield regained the serve, as Edwards sent her serve sailing out of bounds, but they couldn’t capitalize, as Garza sent her serve short of the net, making the score, 9-16.

Zapata was called for touching the net and on the next play, Franco sent a tip over Zapata’s block attempt for a kill, pushing their lead to, 9-18. Deja Johnson sent a kill sailing out of bounds and on the next play, Tia Johnson hit a ball into the net, forcing a four hits call on the Lady Cubs, cutting their lead to, 11-18.

Fields delivered a kill off of Garza, but Alexis Herrera’s serve was short of the net, making the score, 12-19. Tia Johnson delivered a kill off of the block attempt by McNeese for a kill, but the Lady Cats responded to make the score, 13-20.

Blackwell was called for being across the net on a hit, but Tia Johnson answered with a kill to make the score, 14-21. A hit by Garza was tipped out of bounds by Hord, but the Lady Cubs would close out the set on the next four plays to take set two, 15-25, and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Lady Cats started out set three in an, 0-3 hole, before a tip by Tia Johnson was blocked by Parker for a kill, making the score, 1-3. Brownfield rallied for three consecutive points, before McNeese delivered a tip for a kill to make the score, 2-6. Tia Johnson was blocked by Lopez, but the ball landed out of bounds for a kill, making the score, 2-7.

Blackwell sent a kill out of bounds, but Deja Johnson answered with a kill for Brownfield, pushing their lead back out to, 3- 8. The teams went back-and-forth until Deja Johnson sent a kill past Geyah Garza, making the score, 6- 10. The play sparked an eightpoint rally, that ended when the ball was hit into the net by Franco on a second-chance try, making the score, 7-18.

Tia Johnson sent a kill out of bounds and Franco sent a tip into the net, cutting the lead to, 9-18. Parker sent a kill over that went un-returned by the Lady Cubs, trimming the lead to, 10-18. However, The Lady Cubs would close out the set on a, 0-5, scoring run, making the score, 10-25, to take the match, 0-3.

The Lady Cats traveled to Lamesa Tuesday to take on the Lady Tornadoes. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Cats will travel to Denver City on Saturday to take on the Fillies.

First set is scheduled for 11 a.m.
