Hornets secure two seed, set for series with Tahoka

The Sudan Hornets’ varsity baseball team capped off their regular season on Friday with a road victory over Ralls, 16-1.

With the win, the Hornets finsh the regular season with a mark of 17-6 overall, 10-2 in district play.

Sudan rumped on the Jackrabbits early with three runs in the top of the first inning, but Ralls answered with a run in the homehalf of the first, making the score, 3-1, going into the second inning. Sudan would add a run in each of the next two innings, while blanking the Jackrabbits, making the score, 5-1, going into the fourth inning.

Sudan exploded in the fourth inning for eight runs, stretching their lead to, 13-1, going into the fifth inning. In the fifth inning, they would outscore Ralls, 3-0, to take the, 16-1, run-rule victory on the road to close out the regular season.

Cal Carter pitched a complete game for the Hornets, throwing five innings, giving up three hits, two walks and one run, while earning 11 strikeouts in the contest.

At the plate, the Hornets tallied 10 hits as a team, led by Trent Wilson, who finished with three RBI’s and two triples in the game.

Caleb Groetken contributed two RBI’s and three hits, including a triple and a double, while Julian Salas tallied two RBI’s, three hits and a walk, while Jon Conley added two RBI’s. Jesus Salas had one RBI and Marcello King finished with one hit and one walk.

The Hornets will begin a threegame series with Tahoka on Friday in Ralls for the Class 2A Bidistrict Championship. Game one will be Friday at 6 p.m. with Game two set for Saturday at noon and game three to follow if necessary.
