The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team suffered their first district loss of the season, as they fell to the Ralls Jackrabbits on the road, 27-13.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 8-2 overall, 4-1 in district play.
The Hornets finished with 158 yards of total offense, including 14 passing yards and 158 rushing yards.
It was a scoreless first quarter for both teams, but in the second frame, Ralls got things going when Charles Gwinn rushed for a 26-yard touchdown. The PAT was good, making the score, 7-0, in favor of the Jackrabbits. The Hornets would answer on the very next play, s Alan Flores returned the kick-off 65-yard to the house for the touchdown. The PAT by Caleb Groetken was good, tying the game, 7-7.
Ralls would score on a 15-yard touchdown pass, but missed the extra point, taking a, 13-7, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Ralls opened the scoring in the second half with a rushing touchdown, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 19-7. Sudan would answer, as Josue Cervera rushed for an eight-yard touchdown. The PAT by Groetken was no good, leaving the score, 19-13.
Ralls would score once more before the end of the third quarter, as Bryson Jones rushed for a three-yard touchdown. The twopoint conversion was good for the Jackrabbits, making the score, 2713, heading into the final quarter of play.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter, as Sudan came up short against Ralls on the road, 27-13.
Groetken finished the game three-of-13 passing for 14 yards and one interception. He also had five carries for 42 yards.
Cervera led the rushing attack with 10 carries for 69 yards and one touchdown, while Marcello King tallied 12 carries for 33 yards.
Sal Juarez had three catches for 14 yards in the receiving game.
Defensively, Jaden Conley led the team with 19 total tackles, including one for loss and a fumble recovery, while Cervera tallied 18 total tackles. Flores contributed 13 tackles, one for loss, while Matthew Lopez and Juarez tallied 11 tackles apiece. Joel Williams also finished with 10 tackles in the contest.
The Hornets will be at Slaton on Friday in the Class 2A Bi-district round of the play-offs to take on the Ropes Eagles.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
