The Sudan Hornets’ varsity basketball team competed at the Caprock Classic in Lubbock this past week, where they went 0-4 against some tough competition.
In their opener, they took on the Shallowater Mustangs at Coronado High School, falling to the Mustangs, 94-27.
Michael Limon hit three triples in the first quarter for the Hornets, but they trailed the Mustangs, 21-9, heading into quarter number two. Shallowater poured in 27 points in the second frame, taking a, 48-21, lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Hornets were held scoreless in the third quarter, but tallied six points in the final frame, as they fell to the Mustangs, 94-27.
Limon led the team in scoring with 17 points, while Tony Vargas and Abram Rodriguez each tallied four points and Trent Wilson added two points.
In their second game of the tournament, the Hornets took on Sundown at Lubbock-Cooper High School, but they fell short against the Roughnecks, 54-40.
Sudan netted nine points in the opening quarter to take an early lead, 9-5, but in quarter number two the Roughnecks poured in 16 points to take a, 21-18, lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Hornets were outscored, 19-11, in the third quarter and, 14-11, in the final quarter, as they fell to Sundown, 54-40.
Limon led the team in scoring with 15 points, while Abram Rodriguez tallied eight points, Anthony Rodriguez chipped in six points and Kaleb Robinson contributed five points. Josh Cervera added four points and Wilson finished with two points in the contest.
In their third game of the tournament, the Hornets fell to Klondike at Lubbock Christian High School, 59-46.
Sudan poured in 14 points in the opening quarter, but a 20-point outburst to open the contest by the Cougars, gave them a six-point advantage entering quarter number two. In the second frame, Klondike outscored the Hornets, 13-8, to take a, 33-22, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Sudan outscored the Cougars, 13-11, in the third quarter to cut into the lead, but Klondike bounced back with a 15-point fourth quarter to take the contest, 59-46.
Limon went off for 25 points for the Hornets, while Wilson added eight points and Cervera and Robinson each tallied five points. Anthony Rodriguez finished with three points in the contest.
In their final game of the Caprock Classic, the Hornets met up with the Slaton Tigers at Lubbock Christian High School.
Slaton jumped on the Hornets early with a 24-point first quarter and the Hornets were never able to recover. Sudan tallied seven points in the second quarter and nine in the third, before netting just three points in the final quarter, falling to the Tigers, 68-25.
Limon led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Wilson chipped in nine points and Jordie Bellar added four points. Anthony Rodriguez added one point in the contest.
The Hornets hosted Hale Center on Tuesday, as their season continued. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday with a road game at Highland Park.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
