The Amherst Bulldogs’ varsity football team is headed to the Class A Six-Man Division II Football Play-offs, as they will take on Klondike at Slaton on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs are coming off of their open week, after finishing the regular season 7-3 overall, 3-1 in District Play. “The open week allowed us to work on some things and continue to get healthy and have time to take a breath,” Head Coach Daniel Hinojosa said. “ We went 10 straight weeks without a break. So it was welcomed.”

The Coach talked about their first-round match-up against Klondike, saying, “They are a very good team. Offensively they are explosive. Joshua Arismendez and Stephen Arismendes are very good players. There number Kyler Pepper throws the ball well and makes good decisions. Tucker Thixton and Jackson Raines on defense are very good as well as Pepper and Joshua Arismendez. They will present a challenge.”

He added, “ We just need to go out and execute the game plan. Of course with all the Covid-19 stuff and kids just not being 100 percent we have to be able to adapt. So we will continue to adapt and go forward.”

Coach Hinojosa talked about what they will have to do offensively and defensively, saying, “We will have to continue to have a good balance of run and pass. Omar and Diego must run hard and make tough yards. Chris must throw the ball well and make good decisions and Jaime, Gabriel, Hector and Isaac must catch balls.”

He added, “We had three drops against Anton that were Touchdowns. You can’t beat a good team dropping touchdowns. So we have been working to correct that. It should be a tough and physical game. They play hard and execute well. So we will have our work cut out for us. But our kids play hard and go get it; having great leadership and good chemistry is always a plus. We will rely on the fact that we have played a very good schedule to help prepare us for this.”
