The Amherst Bulldogs’ varsity football team got things started on the right foot on Friday, with a, 60-36, victory over Lubbock Home School.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 1-0 overall to open the season.

“I think we got better,” Head Coach Daniel Hinojosa said. “Which is the goal. We executed and we were able to run and throw pretty well. So, I am happy with that.”

He added, “On Defense we played well, but had some break downs. We made young mistakes. But, we hustled to the ball and tackled well.”

Senior, Omar Reyes Jr., led the Bulldogs with 18 carries for 310 yards and six touchdowns, while junior, Jaime Garcia had three catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Chris Gonzalez finished the game seven-of-12 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns, while Diego Aguilar tallied seven carries for 75 yards and one touchdown, while Isaac Herrera added two catches for 40 yards.

Defensively, Jaime Garcia had eight tackles and 2 interceptions, while Sergio Gonzalez and Gabriel Garcia each chipped in seven tackles.

The Bulldogs are on a short week of preparation this week as they take on the Follett Panthers at Claude.

“They are who they are: big, tough, physical and disciplined,” Coach Hinojosa said. “We will need to continue to get better and not worry about them as much as what we need to improve on.”

He added, “It’s early, it’s about learning how to play. They have two good backs, a good Mike linebacker, and a very good offensive line. We are expecting a tough physical game.”

Kick-off for this contest is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Claude.
