Wolverines’ varsity basketball team came up short on the road against Lockney on Tuesday in their season-opener, 50-46.
With the loss, the Lady Wolverines fall to, 0-1 overall on the season.
The Lady Wolverines took a, 138, lead into the second frame, behind seven points from senior, Halee Toscano, and four points from junior, Emma Samaron.
Adri Villarreal scored a lay-up in transition for the Lady Horns to open the scoring in the second quarter, but Toscano answered on the other end with a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from junior, Taytum Goodman, pushing their lead to, 16- 10. Mariah Ascensio came right back with a three for Lockney on the other to cut the lead to one-possession, 16-13.
With four minutes remaining in the first half, Ascensio dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Villarreal to make it a one-point game, 16-15. On the other end, Samaron dropped in a lay-up and drew an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw to push the lead back out to, 19-15, but Lockney had the answer, as Villarreal dropped in a reverse layup to make the score, 19-17, with 3:24 remaining in the first half.
With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Senayda Bernal, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to make it a four-point game, 21-17, but on the other end, Villarreal drove the right side of the basket for a layup, making the score, 21-19, with 2:53 to play in the half.
Toscano was fouled again on a shot attempt by Bernal, sending her back to the line; she converted both shots to stretch the lead to 23-19, but on the other end, Bernal was fouled on an attempt by junior, Sydney Furr, sending Bernal to the line for free throws. She knocked down both attempts at the line to make it a one-possession game, 23-21.
With just over one minute remaining in the half, Toscano was fouled by Villarreal on the entry pass from Adamarie Hernandez and made one-of-two shots at the line to make it a three-point Lady Wolverine lead, 24-21. With under one minute to play in the half, Adaliyah Jones was fouled on an attempt by Goodman; she made the first attempt and missed the second, but Ascensio was able to gather the offense rebound, but the Lady Horns couldn’t capitalize on the extra possession, leaving the score, 24-22.
With time winding down in the half, Villarreal picked up a steal and dumped it off to Bernal for a layup to tie the game, 24-24, going into the locker room at halftime.
Samaron took a charge on Haven Walker to open the third quarter and on their next possession, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Bernal earning a trip to the line. She sank both attempts at the line to put the Lady Wolverines back in front, 26-24. However, it was short-lived, as Ascensio drove to the basket for a lay-up to tie the game, and on the next possession for Lockney Brinley Lefevre dropped in a lay-up to put the Lady Horns in front, 28-26, with 4:45 remaining in the quarter.
Ascensio buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Villarreal but on the other end, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Bernal. She split the shots at the line, trimming the Lockney lead to, 31-27, with 2:59 to play in the third. Lefevre dropped in a lay-up over Samaron and Ascensio followed it up with a three from the top of the key to extend their lead to, 36-27, with 1:37 remaining in the quarter.
Goodman drained a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Sydney Furr to stop the bleeding for the Lady Wolverines and Jasmine Garcia followed it up with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Samaron to slice the lead back down to three points, 36-33. Lockney took a time out with 21.3 seconds remaining in the quarter and out of the break, Ascensio dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Lefevre to close out the quarter for Lockney with the Lady Horns in front, 38-33.
Lefevre opened the final quarter with a lay-up for Lockney, but Samaron answered with a lay-up on the other end, off of the assist from Sydney Furr, trimming the lead to, 40-35. With 4:35 remaining in the game, Villarreal knocked down a three from the left wing off of the assist from Jones, but the Lady Wolverines answered, again, as Sydney Furr knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, making the score, 43-37.
Lockney took a time out with 4:18 to play, and out of the break, Lefevre dropped in a lay-up, but Goodman buried a three on the other end from the right elbow to make it a five-point game, 45-40, with 3:55 remaining in the contest. Villarreal dropped in a bucket for the Lady Horns and Lefevre followed it up with a lay-up on an inbounds play to push their lead back out to 49-40, but the Lady Wolverines would not go away.
Sydney Furr dropped in a layup and on the next play, Goodman was fouled on the floor, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She sank both free throws to make it a five-point game, 49-44, with 2:22 left to play. Samaron scored a putback off of her own miss, but on the other end, Villarreal was fouled on an attempt by Garcia, earning a trip to the line.
She sank one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 50-46, as the Lady Horns held on for the victory.
The Lady Wolverines were led by Toscano, who finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists and Samaron, who netted 11 points, to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Goodman tallied eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal, while Sydney Furr contributed three points, three rebounds, three assists and one block and Hernandez added three points. Garcia finished with three points and three rebounds.
The Lady Wolverines were at Muleshoe on Friday night to take on the Lady Mules. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against the Smyer Lady Cats.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
