The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team came to a close on Thursday night in the first round of the Class 2A Football Play-offs, as they fell to the Farwell Steers, 41-23, in Littlefield.
With the loss, the Mustangs finish the season with a mark of 6-5 overall.
The Mustangs totaled 111 yards of offense, including 101 passing yards and 10 rushing yards.
The Mustangs opened the game with a safety in the first quarter, taking a, 2-0, lead into the second frame.
Farwell got things going in the second quarter with a two-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT was no good, leaving the score, 62, in favor of the Steers. They would add a 27-yard rushing touchdown later in the quarter to make the score, 14-2, after the failed two-point conversion going into the locker room at halftime.
The Steers opened the second half with a one- yard rushing touchdown, but the Olton defense answered with a scoop and score for a two-yard touchdown that was followed with the PAT from senior, Logan Lassiter, to cut the lead to, 21-9.
Olton’s offense would get in on the scoring later in the quarter, as senior, Jake Soliz, caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Lassiter. Lassiter also nailed the PAT to cut the lead to, 21-16. The Mustangs would follow it up with another score, as senior, Joel Olivas Jr., caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Lassiter, putting Olton back in front, 23-21, after the Lassiter PAT.
Farwell, though, would close out the third quarter with a score to regain the lead, as Alec Actkinson hit Joe Crume for a 69yard touchdown pass, followed by the PAT, making the score, 28-23, in favor of the Steers heading into the final quarter of play.
Crume would haul in two more receiving touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as the Steers went on to defeat the Mustangs, 41-23.
Lassiter finished the game 1423 for 101 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.
Christian Chancy tallied three carries for 19 yards, while Fabian Gutierrez finished with 10 carries for 11 yards.
Olivas Jr. led the receiving game with seven catches for 61 yards and one touchdown, while Soliz added five catches for 37 yards and one touchdown. Nathan Urbina had two catches for three yards.
Defensively, the Mustangs had four fumble recoveries, including one return for a touchdown and a safety.
