The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team took down the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes in their second meeting of District play on Friday, 52-20.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 17-8 overall, 5-1 in district play.
Reagan Derington opened the contest with a put-back for Lamesa, but on the other end, Arianna Cruz was fouled on a three-point attempt by Chrisalynn Uresti. She made two-of-three shots at the line and on their next offensive possession, Ashtyn Parker was fouled on an attempt by Mya Carrejo. She made the first shot and missed the second, but Emily Champion was there for the offensive rebound.
Champions offensive rebound led to a three from the left elbow for her, off of the assist from Cruz to extend their lead to, 6-2, with 5:09 remaining in the opening quarter. Reagan Derington picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Kennadi Hanlin. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 6-4.
Carrejo dropped in a lay-up to tie the game, 6-6, but Brookelyn Gau quickly answered, driving to the right side of the basket for a lay-up to regain the lead for Littlefield, 8-6, with 4:02 left to play in the first quarter. Leilani Solis drained a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Gau, but Sagen Oaks answered with a three of her own from the right side to cut the lead to, 11-9.
Solis buried another three from the left elbow and Hanlin followed it up with an outlet pass to Cruz, who dropped in a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 16-9, as Lamesa called for a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Gau dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Mahalia Huey and Cruz closed out the quarter with a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Champion, making the score, 21- 9, going into quarter number two.
In the second quarter, Madison Derington opened things up with a lay-up, and Carrejo split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Parker to make the score, 21-12.
Parker answered with a jumper from the right elbow to make the score, 23-12. Savannah Moreno dropped in a lay-up in transition, but Cruz answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Jasmine Barios and Solis and Gau followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups, making the score, 29-14, with 2:29 remaining in the first half.
Barios dropped in a lay-up to push their lead to, 31-14, as Lamesa took a time out to talk things over with 2:18 to play. Littlefield took a time out with 2:11 remaining in the half, and out of the break, Cruz drained a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Gau and Champion nailed a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Barios to extend their lead to, 37- 14, with 1:03 to play in the half.
Barios dropped in a lay-up in transition and in the closing seconds, Amiah Elizondo was fouled on a put-back attempt by Carrejo. She split the free throws to make the score, 40-14, going into the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter was a low scoring affair with the only points coming on a three from the right elbow by Solis and a put-back in the closing seconds by Gau to make the score, 45-14, going into the final quarter of play.
Madison Derington opened the fourth quarter with a three from the left elbow, but Cruz answered on the other end with a three of her own from the left wing, off of the assist from Champion to make the score, 48-17.
With 3:43 remaining, Cruz was fouled on an attempt by Lexi Hernandez and sank both free throws to extend their lead to, 50- 17. Uresti was fouled on an attempt by Bri Valdez; she split the free throws to trim the lead to, 50-18, but with 2:35 remaining, Huey was fouled on an attempt by Carrejo and converted both attempts at the line to make the score, 52-18.
Reagan Derington dropped in a lay-up off of a steal to close out the fourth quarter, as the Lady Cats were able to run out the final 1:50 to take the contest, 52-20.
The Lady Cats were led by Cruz, who netted 19 points to go along with three assists, three steals and two rebounds, while Solis chipped in 11 points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist. Gau posted 13 rebounds, to go along with six points, two steals, one block and one assist, and Champion netted six points, to go along with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Barios tallied four points, one rebound, one block and one steal, while Parker chipped in three points and three rebounds, and Huey added two points, four rebounds, two steals and one block, while Elizondo added one point, two rebounds and one steal and Hanlin finished with two rebounds and two steals. Valdez added one rebound in the contest.
The Lady Cats will be at Muleshoe on Tuesday for their first meeting with the Lady Mules. Results were not available at press time. They will be back on the court on Tuesday, Jan. 28 th when they travel to Dimmitt for their second meeting with the Bobbies.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
