S-E Lady Wolverines down Tahoka to close out Wildcat Classic

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team closed out the Wildcat Classic last Wednesday with a victory over Tahoka, 49-36.

With the win, the Lady Wolverines finish the tournament 1-2.

Springlake-Earth’s Taytum Goodman hit Mahalia Delgado in transition for a lay-up to open the contest, but Kendra Garcez tied the game with a lay-up off of a steal with 5:50 left to play in the opening quarter. Sayler Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up, off of the assist from Goodman, drawing an and-one foul on Addison Braddock. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 4-2.

With 5:22 left to play in the first quarter, Kylee Ramos was fouled on an attempt by Beerwinkle and sank both free throws to tie the game, 4-4. Grace Reglin followed it up with a lay-up to give Tahoka their first lead of the game, 6-4, but it was short-lived, as Delgado dropped in a lay-up on the other end, drawing an and-one foul on Ramos. She converted the free throw to put Springlake-Earth back in front, 7-6.

With 4:04 remaining in the opening quarter, Ramos dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover, but on the other end, Beerwinkle was fouled on an attempt by Brooklyn Harris earning a trip to the line. She missed both free throws, but Delgado was there for the put-back to give the lead once more, 9-8. She followed it up with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Goodman to stretch their lead to, 11-8, with two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Reglin scored a put-back to make it a one-point Lady Wolverine lead and Zoie Garvin followed it up with a lay-up in transition to put the Lady Bulldogs back in front, 12-11. Springlake-Earth took a time out with 50.3 seconds remaining in the first quarter and out of the break, Beerwinkle dropped in a putback off of a miss by Halee Toscano to put the Lady Wolverines in front by one, 12-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

Brookelyn Harris opened the second quarter with a three from the right wing, but on the other end, Emma Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Brooklyn Harris, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to tie the game, 15-15, and on their next possession, she dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Beerwinkle to put them back in front, 17-15, with just under six minutes left to play in the half.

With 4:14 remaining in the second quarter, Braddock was fouled on an attempt by Beerwinkle; she sank both free throws to tie the game and Nataly Taylor followed it up with a jumper from the free-throw line to put Tahoka back on top, 19-17. With under three minutes to play in the half, Samaron scored a put-back off of the miss by Goodman, tying the game, 19-19.

Garvin was fouled on an attempt by Toscano and split the free throws to give Tahoka a onepoint advantage, but Toscano answered with a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Goodman to regain the lead for Springlake-Earth, 21-20. Goodman drained a three from the left elbow and Toscano dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Samaron, pushing their lead to, 26-20. But, with one second showing on the clock, Ramos buried a deep three from the top of the key to send the game into halftime with the Lady Wolverines in front, 26-23.

Beerwinkle opened the second half with a lay-up off of the assist from Sydney Furr, but Brooklyn Harris answered with a lay-up to keep it a three-point Lady Wolverine lead, 28-25. Goodman dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Beerwinkle and Delgado followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups off of assists from Beerwinkle and Furr to push their lead out to, 34-25.

With 3:52 remaining in the third quarter, Goodman was fouled on an attempt by Ramos. She split the free throws and Beerwinkle followed it up with a lay-up off of an inbound play to stretch the lead to, 37-25. Tahoka answered with a bucket, but the Lady Wolverines came right back down the floor, as Toscano and Beerwinkle each split a pair of free throws to extend their lead to, 39-27, with just over one minute remaining in the quarter.

Garvin dropped ina lay-up for Tahoka, but with time winding down in the quarter, Goodman was fouled on an attempt by Braddock and converted both free throws to push their lead to, 41-29, heading into the final quarter of play.

Reglin split a pair of free throws for Tahoka to open the final quarter of play, but Samaron dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Garcia to make the score, 43-30. Ramos responded with a lay-up for Tahoka, drawing an and-one foul on Goodman. She converted the free throw to cut the lead to, 43-33, but on the other end, Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Ramos. She split the free throws, making the score, 43-33, as Tahoka took a time out with 6:16 left to play in the game.

Beerwinkle fired a pass through traffic to Samaron, who finished off the play with a layup, and Garcia followed it up with a short jumper from the left elbow, off of the inbound pass from Goodman, pushing their lead to, 48-33. With 3:28 remaining in the game, Goodman was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Garvin. She split the attempts to extend their lead to, 49-33.

Tahoka would knocked down a three with just over a minute to play, but Springlake-Earth would take the contest, 49-36.

Delgado led the team in scoring with 13 points and was joined in double-figures scoring by Samaron, who tallied 11 points. Goodman and Beerwinkle each netted nine points, while Toscano chipped in five points and Garcia finished with two points in the contest.

The Lady Wolverines hosted Hart on Tuesday as they resumed District play. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Friday when they travel to Anton to take on the Lady Dogs.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
