MUSTANGS BEAT LOCKNEY TO WIN CONSOLATION BRACKET

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team won the Consolation bracket last Wednesday afternoon with a victory over Lockney, 69-28, at the Wildcat Classic in Littlefield.

With the win, the Mustangs finished tournament play 2-1.

Jake Soliz tossed an outlet pass down court to Chris Urbina, who finished the play with a layup and on their next possession, Chris Urbina pump-faked on the three-point line to draw the defender off balance, before stepping inside the arch for a jumper from the left elbow, making the score, 4-0.

Alex Santillan found Andrew Martinez for a three from the right wing, and Martinez followed it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Santillan, pushing their lead to, 10-0, as Lockney took a time out with 6:18 left to play in the opening quarter.

Out of the break, Martinez knocked down a put-back jumper from the left wing and Soliz followed it up with a pullup from the right elbow off of the assist from Santillan, making the score, 14-0, with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter. Chris Urbina kept the rally going with a jumper from the left wing, off of the assist from Santillan, but on the other end, Johnathan Cienfuegos was fouled on an attempt by Brennon Huguley. He split the attempts at the line, making the score, 16-1, with 2:41 left to play in the quarter.

Jesus Gonzales followed it up with a lay-up in transition for Lockney, but with time winding down in the quarter, Huguley dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Soliz, making the score, 18-3, as the first quarter came to a close.

Chris Urbina opened the second quarter with a jumper from the right elbow and followed it up with a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 22-3. Josh Barreterro dropped in a lay-up for Lockney, drawing an and-one foul on Soliz. He converted the free throw, making the score, 22-6, with 6:30 left to play in the half.

Soliz answered with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Santillan, as Lockney took a time out with 5:57 remaining in the second quarter to talk things over.

Out of the break, Chris Urbina knocked down a jumper from the right wing off of the assist from Santillan and Nick Casares followed it up with a runner from the left elbow to extend their lead to, 29-6. Casares followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, but Lockney answered, as Austin Rodriguez dropped in a floater in the lane, as Olton took a time out with 1:49 left to play in the first half.

Out of the break, Huguley was fouled on an attempt by Jisiah Lara and converted both free throws to extend the lead to, 33-8. With just over one minute remaining in the half, Santillan drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Joe Canchola, who finished the play with a lay-up, making the score, 35-8.

Nathan Hernandez dropped in a floater in the lane for Lockney, but in the closing seconds, Santillan was fouled on an attempt and sank both free throws, as Olton closed out the first half in front of Lockney, 37-10.

Martinez opened the second half with a three from the left elbow for Olton, but Lockney answered with a three of their own, making the score, 40-13. Barreterro knocked down a jumper from the right wing, but on the other end, Huguley was fouled on an attempt by Hernandez and split the free throws, making the score, 41-15.

With just under six minutes remaining in the quarter, Malaki Alvis scored a put-back, but Soliz answered on the other end with a runner in the lane off of the assist from Martinez, making the score, 43-17. Huguley scored a put-back off of his own miss, as Lockney took a time out with 4:21 remaining in the quarter, trailing Olton, 45-17.

Out of the break, Santillan dropped in a floater from the right elbow off of the assist from Canchola, but Lockney responded, as Gonzales drove the left baseline for a lay-up, making the score, 47-19.

With 2:23 remaining in the quarter, Santillan bounced a pass to Casares in transition for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 49-19. On their next possession, Santillan was fouled on a fastbreak attempt by Max Ramirez. He made one-of-two shots at the line and Felix Gonzales dropped in a lay-up to end the third quarter with the Mustangs in front of Lockney, 50-21.

Ramirez knocked down a jumper from the left elbow for Lockney to open the fourth quarter, but Soliz answered with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Chris Urbina, and Chris Urbina followed it up with a three from the left wing off of the assist from Santillan, making the score, 56-23.

Chris Urbina drained another three from the left wing off of the assist from Huguley and Martinez kept the rally going with a lay-up, off of the assist from Chris Urbina, pushing their lead to, 61-23. Chris Urbina buried his third three-pointer of the quarter on a show from the right elbow, off of the assist from Martinez, extending their lead to, 64-23.

With 2:38 remaining in the game, Andrew Bustillos was fouled on an attempt Casares. He converted both free throws, making the score, 64-25. Chris Urbina dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Nick Casares and followed it up with a three from the right elbow, stretching their lead out to, 69-25.

Jesus Gonzales split a pair of free throws and Felix Gonzales converted a pair of free throws to close out the game, as Olton took the Consolation Bracket final, 69-28.

Chris Urbina led the team in scoring with 26 points, and was joined in double-figures scoring by Martinez who netted 13 points and Soliz, who finished with 10 points.

Huguley tallied seven points, while Casares chipped in six points, Santillan added five points and Canchola finished with two points.
