Lady Wolverines down Petersburg at Whiteface Tourney

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team won their tournament-opener on Thursday at Whiteface, as they took down Petersburg, 66-45.

With the win, the Lady Wolverines move to 1-0 in tournament play this weekend.

Sprinalake-Earth won the opening tip-off as junior, Halee Toscano, tipped the ball to sophomore, Taytum Goodman, who took it to the hoop for a quick lay-up to open the contest. Alejandra Colunga hit Kianna Ortiz on a backdoor cut for a lay-up to tie the game, 2-2, but senior, Sayler Beerwinkle, answered on the other end with a put-back off of her own miss, drawing an and-one foul on Ortiz. She converted the free throw to put the Lady Wolverines back in front, 5-2, with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

Goodman found Toscano for a layup and on their next possession, Beerwinkle connected with Goodman on the fast-break for a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 9-2, with 3:19 left to play in the quarter. Colunga took a charge on Toscano, but the Lady Buffaloes couldn’t capitalize, as Goodman picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, making the score, 11-2.

Petersburg responded with a layup, but with under one minute to play in the quarter, Jasmine Garcia buried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Beerwinkle, pushing their lead out to, 14-4. Aubrey Vasquez split a pair of free throws, after being fouled on an attempt by Emma Samaron and Balley Norris closed out the first quarter with a put-back to cut the lead to, 14-7, heading into quarter number two.

Colunga opened the second quarter with a three from the left elbow for Petersburg, as Springlake-Earth called for a time out with 6:52 to play in the first half. Out of the break, Riley Furr dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Beerwinkle, but on the other end, Autumn Montez was fouled on an attempt by Goodman. She converted both free throws to make it a fourpoint game, 16-12.

With just over five minutes to play in the first half, Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Ebediah Nava; she split the attempts at the line to make the score, 17-12. Two possessions later, Beerwinkle tossed the outlet pass ahead to Goodman for a fast-break lay-up, making the score, 19-12, with 4:20 left to play in the half.

With 3:34 left to play in the half, Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Samaron, drawing an and-one foul on Vasquez. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 21-12. Sydney Furr grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback attempt by Ortiz. She converted both free throws, pushing their lead to, 23-12.

Samaron knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Goodman, but Brooke McWilliams, Brianna Ortiz and Colunga answered with back-to-back-to-back lay-ups for Petersburg to slice the lead to, 25-18 with just over one minute to play in the half. Goodman hit Sydney Furr on a backdoor cut for a lay-up, but Norris closed out the half with a lay-up for Petersburg, making the score, 27-20, with Springlake-Earth out in front going into the locker room at halftime.

Springlake-Earth came out strong in the third quarter, as Toscano drained a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Goodman and then followed it up wit a lay-up off of a turnover, drawing an and-one foul on Norris. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 32-20, with just under seven minutes to play in the third.

With 6:06 left to play in the quarter, Petersburg took a full time out and out of the break, Nava dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Colunga, making the score, 32-22. Beerwinkle answered with a lay-up on the other end, drawing an and-one foul on Vasquez. She converted the free throw to extend their lead to, 35-22, and on their next play, Beerwinkle was fouled on an attempt by Colunga, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to push their lead out to, 37-22, with just over four minutes to play in the game.

Sydney Furr knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Beerwinkle and Goodman followed it up with a fast-break lay-up off of the outlet pass from Toscano, making the score, 41-22. Beerwinkle kept it going with a lay-up off of the assist from Goodman to make the score, 43-22, with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Vasquez knocked down a pair of free throws for the Lady Buffaloes and Norris followed it up with a jumper in the lane, but on the other end, Toscano buried a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Goodman and Beerwinkle followed it up with a lay-up on the left side off of the assist from Goodman, making the score, 48-26. With time winding down in the quarter, Sydney Furr dropped in a layup off of the assist from Beerwinkle to close out the third quarter with Springlake-Earth out in front, 50-26.

Norris dropped in a lay-up to open the fourth quarter, drawing an andone foul on Toscano, who fouled out of the contest. She converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 50-29, but Springlake-Earth answered, as Samaron dropped in a lay-up off of a steal and Beerwinkle followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Goodman, stretching the lead to, 54-29.

With 5:37 left to play, Nava dropped in a lay-up and was fouled on the play by Garcia. She converted the free throw and Colunga followed it up with a layup to cut the lead to, 54-34. Samaron was fouled on the floor by Norris, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line; she split the attempts making the score, 55-34.

On the other end, Montez was fouled on an attempt by Garcia with four minutes left to play in the game. She made both free throws, but Garcia responded on the other end with a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Beerwinkle, making the score, 58-36.

Brianna Ortiz answered right back with a three of her own from the left elbow for Petersburg, but Sydney Furr dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Beerwinkle and Samaron followed it up with a lay-up off of another assist from Beerwinkle, making the score, 62-39, with 2:36 left to play.

Montez split a pair of free throws for Petersburg, but with 1:30 left to play, Sydney Furr found Samaron inside for a lay-up to make the score, 64-40. Kianna Ortiz dropped in a lay-up and Nava split a pair of free throws to make the score, 64-43, and with under one minute to play, Kianna Ortiz knocked down a jumper in the lane to trim the lead to, 64-45. In the closing seconds, Samaron dropped in a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Nava. She missed the free throw, as Springlake-Earth went on to take down Petersburg, 66-45.

Beerwinkle led the team in scoring with 16 points, and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Toscano and Samaron, who each netted 11 points and Goodman and Sydney Furr, who each netted 10 points.

Garcia added six points and Riley Furr finished with two points in the contest.

The Lady Wolverines will be at Olton on Tuesday as their season continues.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
