Wildcats fall at home to Idalou, 33-31

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team fell at home to Idalou on Tuesday, 33-31.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 1-2 overall on the season.

Corbin Huges opened the game with a three from the left wing for Idalou and on the next play, Houston Stark went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to extend their lead to, 5-0, with just over five minutes to play in the opening quarter. Littlefield took a time out with 4:48 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break, Kutter Houchin dropped in a floater off of the give-and-go to push their lead to, 7-0.

Riley Hall dropped in a lay-up for Idalou and on the defensive end, Hall took a charge on senior, Jordan Trevino, giving Idalou the ball with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. Hall scored a lay-up off of a steal to make it a double-digit lead for Idalou, 11-0. Houchin split a pair of free throws after drawing a blocking foul on freshman, Chip Green.

But, on the other end, sophomore, Omar Martinez, dropped in a teardrop in the lane, drawing an and-one foul on Carter Crump. He missed the free throw, but got the Wildcats on the board, trimming the Idalou lead to, 12-2. With 2:13 left to play in the first, Green picked up a steal and Elijah Salazar dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Green, cutting the lead to, 12-4.

Idalou took a time out with 1:59 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Martinez dropped in a lay-up of the left side, trimming the lead to, 12-6. Hall knocked down a jumper in the lane for Idalou, but with time winding down in the quarter, senior, Ethan Garcia, knocked down a pull-up jumper from the left elbow, making the score, 14-8, as the first quarter came to a close.

Martinez opened the second quarter with a runner in the lane off of the assist from Salazar to cut the lead to four points, 14-10, but Stark answered with a lay-up for Idalou to make the score, 16-10, with 7:24 remaining in the first half. On the other end, Martinez was fouled on an attempt by Houchin, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-of-two shots at the free-throw line to make the score, 16-11.

Junior, Tyrell Norman, took a charge on Hendley, and Littlefield capitalized, as Martinez knocked down a runner in the lane, making the score, 16-13, with just under six minutes to play in the half. On their next possession, Norman wen coast-to-coast drawing a shooting foul on an attempt by Xaveon Cavazos. Idalou took a time out with 5:43 to play in the half and out of the break, Norman split the free throws to make the score, 16-14.

Cavazos buried a three from the left elbow for Idalou, but on the other end, senior, Ryan West, was fouled on an attempt by Austin Flores. He converted one-of-two shots at the foul line, making the score, 19-15. with under a minutes to play, Garcia scored a putback off of a miss by Jordan Trevino, making the score, 19-17, in favor of Idalou, going into the locker room at halftime.

Houchin got the third quarter started with a jumper from the freethrow line, but Littlefield answered on the other end, as junior, Javen Jimenez, hit Jordan Trevino on a backdoor cut, who was fouled on an attempt by Cavazos. He converted both shots at the line to make it a one-possession game, 21-19. With just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Houchin dropped in a lay-up on the right side and Hughes followed it up by taking a charge on Martinez with 3:31 remaining in the quarter.

Martinez picked up a steal and scored on a fast-break lay-up and on the next play, Jordan Trevino picked up a steal and got it ahead to Martinez in transition for a layup to tie the game, 23-23, with 1:51 remaining in the quarter. Idalou called a quick time out and out of the break, Martinez heaved an outlet pass down court to Jordan Trevino, who dropped in the fastbreak lay-up to give Littlefield their first lead of the game, 25-23, as the third quarter came to a close.

Cavazos split a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter, after being fouled by West, but on the other end, West was fouled on a put-back attempt by Stark. He missed both free throws, but Norman grabbed the offensive rebound and got it to Jimenez on the perimeter, who buried a three from the left elbow to stretch the Littlefield lead to, 28-24.

Idalou quickly answered, as Houchin and Cavazos scored back-to-back lay-ups to tie the game, 28-28, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:51 remaining in the contest. Cavazos was fouled on an attempt by Salazar, and split the free throws to give Idalou a onepoint lead, 29-28, but on the other end Jordan Trevino buried a three from the right elbow to make it a one-possession lead for Littlefield, 31-29.

With 2:19 left to play, Garcia took a charge on Cavazos, but they couldn’t capitalize on the turnover. Cavazos scored on a put-back off of a miss by Houchin to tie the game, 31-31, as Idalou took a time out with 45.1 seconds to play in the game. Out of the break, Idalou ran the clock down to 18 seconds before Houchin dropped in a flaoter from the right elbow to make the score, 33-31.

Littlefield took a time out with 12.1 seconds remaining and out of the break, Norman’s shot was no good, as Littlefield’s comeback efforts fell short, as they fell to Idalou, 33-31. Martinez led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Jordan Trevino chipped in seven points and Garcia netted four points. West and Jimenez each tallied three points, while Salazar added two points and Norman finished with one point in the contest.
