WILDCATS NOTCH FIRST WIN OF SEASON

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team took down the Tahoka Bulldogs on Friday at Wildcat Gym, 73-37.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-1 overall on the season.

Senior, Jordan Trevino, got the Wildcats going in the first quarter, as he knocked down a free-throw line jumper, off of the assist from sophomore, MJ Randle to make the score, 2-0. Bryson Stone answered on the other end for the Bulldogs to tie the game and on their next possession, Cason Resendez dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on sophomore, Omar Martinez. He converted the free throw to put the Bulldogs in front, 5-2, with 6:35 remaining in the opening quarter.

Hunter Garrison scored back-to-back lay-ups for the Bulldogs, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over with 5:27 left to play in the first quarter, trailing Tahoka, 9-2. Out of the break, senior, Jaron Cabello was fouled on an attempt by Lain DeLeon. He split the free throws to trim the lead to, 9-3.

Cabello would follow it up with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Randle, making it a three-point game, 9-6, but on the other end Tahoka would respond, as DeLeon dropped in a lay-up from the right side to push their lead back out to, 11-6, with 2:35 remaining in the quarter.

With just under two minutes remaining in the quarter, junior, Javen Jimenez, was fouled on an attempt by Matthew Stone. He converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 11-8. Senior, Ty’Jae Chambers, scored a putback off of a miss by Jimenez to make it a one-point game, 11-10, and with under one minute to play in the quarter, freshman, Chip Green, dropped in a putback off of a miss by Cabello to give the Wildcats their first lead, 12-11, since the opening basket of the game.

Resendez took a charge on Jimenez, but in the closing seconds of the quarter, Cabello grabbed a steal and dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Matthew Stone. He would miss the free throw, leaving the score, 14-11, as the first quarter came to a close.

Resendez opened the second quarter with a lay-up for Tahoka, but on the other end Elijah Salazar drove the lane, flipping the no-look pass across the lane to Jordan Trevino for the lay-up, pushing their lead out to, 16-13, with 6:29 left to play in the half. With under six minutes to play in the quarter, Chambers saved a ball to Jordan Trevino, who put it in for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 18-13.

Bryson Stone buried a three from the top of the key and Garrison scored a put-back for the Bulldogs to tie the game, 18-18, but with 3:24 left to play in the half, Cabello dropped in a layup off of the assist from Jordan Trevino, drawing an and-one foul on Brogan Stone. He converted the free throw to make it a three-point Littlefield lead, 21-18

ḊeLeon was fouled on an attempt by Jeremiah Trevino and split the free throws to make it a one-possession game, 21-19. On the other end, Cabello was fouled on the floor by Matthew Stone and converted both ends of the one-in-one opportunity to extend the Wildcat lead to, 23-19.

With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Bryson Stone knocked down a jumper from the right wing, but Green answered on the other end with a three from the right elbow to make the score, 26-21. With under one minute to play in the half, Jeremiah Trevino buried a three from the right elbow, but in the closing seconds, JD Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Chambers and split the free throws, making the score, 29-22, going into the locker room at halftime.

Martinez opened the second half with a lay-up for the Wildcats and senior, Ethan Garcia, was fouled on an attempt by Garrison, earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws, pushing their lead to double digits, 32-22. Jeremiah Trevino was fouled on their next possession by Garrison and made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 33-22, with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter.

With 5:21 remaining in the quarter, Cabello scored a lay-up off of a steal to push their lead to, 35-22, as Tahoka took a time out with 5:20 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Chambers dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Martinez, drawing an and-one foul on Bryson Stone. He converted the free throw to make the score, 38-22, with just over five minutes to play in the quarter.

Tahoka ended their scoring drought, as Resendez dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 38-24. However, Chambers converted a pair of free throws and Cabello scored a put-back off of a miss by Jordan Trevino, stretching the lead to, 42-24. Tahoka took a time out with 3:19 remaining in the quarter and out of the break, Chambers was fouled on a put-back attempt by Brogan Stone. He missed both free throws, but the offensive rebounds fell into the hands of Cabello, who found Jordan Trevino on the right elbow, who knocked down a three to push the lead to, 45-24, with 1:52 left to play in the quarter.

Cabello picked up a steal and dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Bryson stone. He missed the free throw leaving the score, 47-24, with 1:22 remaining in the quarter. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Salazar buried a three from the left wing and then picked up a steal on their own end and dropped it in for a layup making the score, 52-24.

Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt and split the free throws for Tahoka, but on the next play Garcia took a charge on Resendez, giving the Wildcats the ball with 12 seconds to play in the quarter. With time winding down in the third, Jordan Trevino was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Brogan Stone. He converted all three attempts at the line to make the score, 55-25, heading into the final quarter of play.

Garcia was fouled on the floor by Rodriguez in the double-bonus, earning a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter. He made one-of-two shots at the line to stretch the lead to, 56-25. Martinez dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Jordan Trevino, but Matthew Stone answered with a three from the right elbow, making the score, 58-28, with 5:43 to play in the game.

Garcia split a pair of free throws for the Wildcats after being fouled by Paul Guerrero and Randle hit Jeremiah Trevino with a no-look pass for a lay-up on the next play to make the score, 61-28, with just over five minutes to play in the game.

With 4:33 remaining, Resendez was fouled on an attempt; he made the first shot and missed the second, but Guerrero was there for the put-back to cut the lead to, 61-31. Martinez dropped in a lay-up on the left side for Littlefield, but Guerrero answered with another lay-up for Tahoka to make the score, 63-33. Cabello scored a fast-break lay-up off of a steal to push the lead back out to, 65-33, with 3:30 left to play in the contest.

Guerrero scored a lay-up in transition off of the assist from Brogan Stone, but on their next possession, Cabello took a charge on Resendez, who fouled out of the contest as Littlefield regained possession. With 2:36 left to play, Cabello drove to the basket for a lay-up and with just over two minutes to play in the game, he dropped in another bucket, pushing their lead to, 69-35

Ṡalazar buried a three from the right elbow and Chambers split a pair of free throws to make the score, 73-35, but Brogan Stone dropped in a floater on the right side in the closing seconds to make the score, 73-37, as the Wildcats took down the Bulldogs, 73-37.

Cabello led the team in scoring with 21 points, and he was joined in double figures scoring by Jordan Trevino, who finished with 12 points. Salazar, Chamber and Jeremiah Trevino each finished with eight points, while Martinez tallied six points and Green contributed five points.

Garcia netted three points and Jimenez finished with two points in the contest.

The Wildcats will return to the court on Nov 30 th when they host the Idalou Wildcats.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
