The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team opened their season on Tuesday with a home win over Tahoka, 87-39.

With the win, the Mustangs are 1-0 overall to begin the 2021-22 campaign.

Olton poured in 25 points in the first quarter, behind a pair of threes from Andrew Martinez, making the score, 25-18, heading into quarter number two. In the second frame, the Mustangs held the Bulldogs to just two points, while they netted 27 points, behind a 12-point outing from Chris Urbina to make the score, 52-20, heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Mustangs’ offensive barrage continued in the third quarter when they netted 22 points, including eight from Joe Canchola to make the score, 74-25, heading into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, Brennon Huguley chipped in seven points, as the Mustangs went on to take the contest, 87-39.

Chris Urbina led the team in scoring with 19 points and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Huguley, who netted 17 points, Alex Santillan, who tallied 12 points and Canchola who finished with 10 points.

Nick Casares, Jake Soliz and Nathan Urbina each finished with six points and Jimmy Munoz added two points in the contest.

The Mustangs hosted Nazareth on Friday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday when they travel to Lockney to take on the Longhorns.

Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
