Wolverine cross country team takes third at state

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ cross country team brought home bronze on Saturday as they competed at the State cross country meet in Round Rock.

“It was a wild weekend. We left around 11 p.m. Friday night. We stopped in Lubbock to pick up JR Vargas who broke his collarbone during the football game Friday night,” Head Coach Daniel Gutierrez said. “We made it to Round Rock around 5:30 a.m. and the boys slept for about three hours in the hotel and then woke up.”

He added, “The heart and dedication that these young men showed – because once they found out one of their teammates was not going to run with them they dedicated themselves to trying to win the meet or place in the top three. It was a big deal Vargas was injured and couldn’t run, but it was even more amazing seeing the boys step up for him and compete because Vargas had been putting in extra work running and pulling sleds the past two weeks.
